Posted · Fan noise?

I just got an UM2 and the fans are exceptionally loud (75-80 decibels). Does anyone has this problem? What did you do? Has anyone replaced their fans with different one? Seems that nowadays, fans should be whisper quite...

cheers.

All the fans are very quiet. There are 3 fans. The rear fan comes on first before even the light comes on. The side fans come on when printing but you can turn them on before printing if you tell it to print and jump to the TUNE menu.

The fans should be very quiet. The fans are quieter than the x,y,e steppers which are about as loud as a quiet dishwasher. Then there is the Z axis which is very loud but infrequent.

As dkaygee says, it's probably loose screws or maybe the sheet metal that holds the side fans is bent/rubbing or something else is wrong. I accidentally put a screwdriver into one fan and it was noisy for a few days until I just bent the little spot back again. Now they are whisper quiet once again.

I also had one of my 4 screws loose and it wouldn't tighten (just was loose and rattling) so I just removed it and one fan is held in by only 3 screws and it's fine.

Just got Ultimaker 2 and my startup fan is at about 65 dB.

Screws are not loose, the sound is a bit annoying when you are sitting next to the machine. I'm not even sure why the fan has to be on until the machine is printing, or the nozzle needs to cool down.

Don't want to use grease, wouldn't white lithium be a better solution to use?

I recommend you request a new fan from support.ultimaker.com. They are nice about this sort of thing and will likely just send you one in the mail. The fan on my ultimaker is very quiet. About the same as a typical laptop computer. It makes a dishwasher sound like a rock concert in comparison. I'd look at the fan carefully - one of the blades may have been damaged and is touching something.

The screws are fine, that's the first thing I checked...

Side fans or 3rd rear fan?

Touch things and see if something is vibrating. For some people the fan shroud was the problem.

As quiet as a laptop? Not mine... the rear fan is very noisy, i thought it was normal but if you tell me that it should be very low then i might have a similar problem too.

It almost sounds like a small vaccum cleaner.

I will have a look at the screws. I don't hear more noise when the side fan are on.
