A screw came out of my UM2

Posted · A screw came out of my UM2

During the fourth print on my brand new UM2, I noticed a screw laying on the bottom of the printer under the print bed. It looks like it came from the bottom of the z-axes platform (see picture with arrow), but when I try to screw it back it, nothing grabs. It seems like I'll need to take something apart to get at the nut it's supposed to connect with.

Any advice? Am I correct about where the screw should go (see attached picture)? What do I need to disassemble to get there? Are there any disassembly instructions for the UM2?

I know that the printer is meant to be taken apart and hacked, however, being so new with it I'm afraid of breaking it.

Thanks

Yes, it's likely the screw came from there. It's one of two that hold in place the bent, L-shaped dibond panel that sits at the back of the bed, and covers up the bearings etc. To be honest, it's not critical that you replace the screw, so long as the corresponding screw by the other vertical rod is still tight.

The screw should go into a square nut that's inserted in the back of the bent panel, above the hole. That might be missing, or misaligned.

If you want to try and fix it, you need to remove the other screw, by the other vertical rod, and then lift up the bent panel so you can feel behind it.

If the nut has fallen out, or is out of place, put it back in. A little bit of tape over the nut will help hold it in place while you put everything back into place.

If you're careful, you can bend the panel back straight, in order to work on it easier. When you put it back in place, make sure it seats down properly on top of the long bearings for the two smooth rods, so that the edges of the holes aren't catching on the rods at all.

You might possibly want to tilt your UM2 on it's side and see if that square nut comes out and save it until you need it. I don't know much about this part of the UM2 so I don't even know if it *can* fall out.

That did it. I also removed the two corner metal brackets, that hide the stepper motors, so I could get at the bent panel more easily. The other square nut was still taped in there, just out of place like you mentioned. All back together and printing again!
