The two biggest problems I encountered when I enlarged my UM to an UM+,

was a sturdy frame and very sturdy Z-platform.

everything else work very easy, the UM original lends itself very easily for extension :)

So how big is your UM+?

I want to expand to 400 x 400mm but leave the Z direction standard, so the plan is larger rods new panels and direct mount extruder. Its for architectural models and height is never an issue plus i do fancy a delta printer as well.

    If you are looking to print architectural models at double the x and y, but don't need more z, you may want to look at a gMax. It was designed by an architect specifically with this in mind.

    My UM+ is 20 X 20 X 400 cm

    I enlarged it for a special project, I am now considering to rebuild it again with a wider built volume, for another project,

    some changes I made then were not working as good as I hoped :)

    The biggest changes I will make is better construction material, and more guided support for the z-platform

    Wow! Rails? That's one sure way to keep the bed stable!

    The rails work great, as long as no pollution gets in the way.

    I used cheap Chinese ones, and the smoothness gets wobly after some dirt gets in the way, I really want to replace those with better quality and more closed against dirt.

    once you start building your larger ultimaker, would you like some help with that? it might also help you source you with cheaper parts if you buy multiple..

    I want to have a larger build area, but not completely sure on how to proceed. you seem to have this under control :)

    i'd be your extra pair of eyes ;)

    So you managed to keep the Bowden with the greater depth, that's cool as I want to reuse as many parts from my machine.

    Looked at the gmax but the website says they will not ship outside the US

    Plan now is get an ultimaker 2 then strip my ultimaker original

    When I planned for the higher z-stage I planned to reuse as much of the original Ultimaker as possible,

    I still have not decided exactly what size I will build.

    It seems wise to use multiples of the standard width of the Ultimaker build size, so I can maybe use multiples of heated beds :)

    I'll probably move the feeder to middle at the back so I can still use the stock bowden tube,

    I now own a laser cutter big enough to cut out the panels to extend my ultimaker 1, so who are the best suppliers of parts that people would recommend, only requirement is they ship to the UK.

    I am after 400 x400 heated bed plus glass, longer belts and rods.

    Also as i will need to extend the wiring for the steppers and limit switches, where can i get the original connectors male and female.

    If I were you, I'd put the electronics onto the back of the printer (where the spool usually sits) - closer to the motors - and actually make them shorter instead of longer. Shorter wiring improves performance and reliability (noise immunity).

    If you find a good 400x400 mm platform, please let us know. I don't know any source for larger than usual plates...

    hope this happens...its my one thing ive disliked while hunting for a 3d printer to purchase...build dimensions are fairly small for what i am wanting to do

    Just bought a 300x200mm heated bed from reprap.me.

    I'll take a look at it and then probably adapt my Ultimaker Black edition to this size. I don't want it to be too big - my new frame isn't as compact as the UM original frame. And the thing should still be able to sit on a sideboard or small table (40cm depth).

    I built an XMaker which is a mash up of a few different designs, including the xy setup of the ultimaker. It uses a 300x300 print bed and I've increased the z axis to over 400mm. It simply supports the bed on both sides and makes it very stable. I've had a little inconsistency in the smoothness in my walls, but I think it's because I'm using Reptar XY holders and need to swap in some stronger ones.

        Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface.
