I'd take the descriptive variant. Not all icons are clear and one might forget their meaning if they don't look at the display very often. The buttons on demand is a very good idea!

"Flow", of course, would only work with proprietary Cura-generated gcode, where it is a variable. It does not work at all with "standard" gcode.

Well, Flow is a variable in Marlin (not only on the UM2) and should therefore not be restricted to be accessed by Cura alone, should it?
@TinkerGnome: Very nice studies.I like the ones with the icons... ;-)
I'm not dead-certain how it works, but when I tweak the flow on my UM2 while printing gcode generated by Kisslicer, it does not appear to make any difference at all.
My guess is that Ultimaker gcode uses a variable for the flow, instead of a fixed constants in normal gcode.
The flow setting in Cura does indeed alter the 'E' values written in the G1 commands.
However, the setting in the UM2 menu does alter the factor in Marlin which is accessible by an M221 command and could be used by any slicer software. The TweakAtZ plugin in Cura also uses the M221 command.
All I can tell you for sure is that if I raise the flow setting to 200%, my Kisslicer-generated prints don't change at all.
Very strange...
Possibly a UM2 firmware bug?

Contains the Kisslicer gcode M221 commands?
This would override the manual setting...
The only difference related to UltiGCode is the initialization at the beginning of a print. Using UltiGCode the "extrudemultiply" is intialized from the configured material setting, elsewise with 100%.
Maybe. But let's continue that in a different/new thread.
happy new year ! ulti-makers of the world !
My good resolution for this year : Stop the RHUM....the same as last year...
Ok, we return to our sheep ( french expression - back to the topic )
Additionally: what about using the bottom line for status messages - and showing the menu buttons only "on demand" (i.e. only after scrolling or clicking the wheel)?
Good idea, more space for information and more visibility.

Likes this one.

i agree with @Nicolinux.
Icon Temperature : good, an idea...." icon " 260 " C " replaced by " icon " 260 " ° ", it's possible ?
And the same icon for the bed temperature.
Icon Fan : it is possible to animate ? Only when the fans turn ?
Icon Speed, Flow and Bed temperature : they are strange no ?
Icon time : good simple and effective.
My vision.....

greeting !
I've updated the version on GitHub.
This one uses the icons and a "gizmo" for the material flow is added.
A short explanation text is shown on the top line once an option is selected.
But we still need some nice bitmaps for the icons...
Icon Speed, Flow and Bed temperature : they are strange no ?
I don't like the fan too...perhaps because it is homemade by myself...?
Is there an artist who can help out? The size is max. 7x7 pixel and only two possible colors...
Suggestions are welcome...
In addtion the bottom line is now used for M117 messages. After a timeout of 30 seconds the two menu options are replaced by the message (if present).
Together with the right slicer (or plugin) something like this is possible (i used Cura with the ShowLayer plugin as an example):
Thank's to Amedee for the idea.
Other GCodeFlavors as "UltiGCode" should also work - but i have testet this only in the simulator.
The compiled binaries are updated too (..../Marlin/resources/firmware).
Try it for yourself, if you like - but on your own risk.
Greetings!
I try tonight the tinker.
Good work as usual.
my contribution tonight
Tomorrow I draw other icon
++
I' ve made a copy for the display - just to get an impression...
Hello, first sorry for my english, but I will do what I can
I Have "Drawing" icon and I have post it on a french topic
http://umforum.ultimaker.com/index.php?/topic/8967-dessine-moi-une-ic%C3%B4ne/
with adrien's production
And an idea for the fan line
++
i have some favorites - but who wants to make a decision...?
As far as i can see there are two possibilities:
- i choose some like an autocrat... (just kidding...)
- or we need a voting....
See you tomorrow!
I think the best icon is :
-bed temp adrien 1
-fan 3
-flow 2
-speed 1
-time 1
And for the fan ligne I think the third is good
You write the code, you choose the icons.

You write the code, you choose the icons.6^)
The same for me
Ok ok - i've made a decision...
...and i found the "(zipped) .hex file is much easier this way.
No giant steps, but it goes on:
As always: if you like - try it out on your own risk... and give feedback.
Greetings!
Thanks, I try it now
