We feel honored to be nominated in this many categories, and at the same time we already feel victorious (but humble) that our efforts and get noticed in this dynamic market.

The Ultimaker 2 has been nominated as best Consumer product.

You don’t necessarily have to make a living out of 3D printing to make the step towards this mesmerizing technique.

Whether you are just interested in 3D printing or you see a great way of how to improve on your hobbies Ultimaker is a great fit! Our community is full with people who are the living proof.

Because of the user friendly nature of our products, both software and hardware, it is appealing for everyone to get involved. Our slicing software Cura makes it easy for the user to understand what he is doing.

And with the entire community being only a mouse-click away you never have to struggle alone because there is a huge group of active friendly people (I mean you guys! ) happy to help, inspire and work with you.

Within approximately 15 minutes after unboxing the Ultimaker 2 you can already start your first print. The interface that we installed helps you through the proces of setting up and the auto-filament feed feature will even help you feeding the filament.

But getting into this rapidly moving revolution may be a scary thing because development is going so fast, hardware can easily become outdated.

But at Ultimaker we want to take care of our users and that is why we are backwards compatible. That means for example someone who bought the Ultimaker Original 3 years ago, has had the choices of updating its hardware to the model we sell today!

Best Consumer software

Besides developing Ultimaker hardware, Ultimaker also accelerates in Ultimaker Software, Cura. Cura is a prime example of why being open source is beneficial. Originally created in our community Cura soon started to get noticed by many users. And that has never changed!

After Ultimaker hired the developer to continue its hard and fruitful work, Cura is still one of the most popular slicers and because it is open source it is being used by a large variety of differently branded 3D Printers. For the beginners it has default profiles and for the 3D print heavy weights there are expert settings.

Cura is also 65 times faster then most comparable slicers, which allows you to always be on time for your favorite tv-show!

Brand of the year

Ultimaker is also nominated as Brand of the year. This particularly is a huge honor because it shows that our activities and efforts do not go unnoticed. We at Ultimaker have always been very loyal to our values, even though they have not always been the easiest path.

Being a pioneer of sharing has allowed us to move faster and work with a larger group of developers then could ever fit in a building!

As one of the few successful open source businesses we force the market to keep innovating.

For about 30 years the technology has stood (close to) still, but when patents expired the creativity re-ignited again. This community doesn’t stand still, and we feel proud to represent that large group of users through our technology! In our work we also notice that we can help a lot of other initiatives as well. We have been in close relation with http://www.enablingthefuture.org/ and donated $10.000 worth of Ultimaker's to their cause. e-NABLE is a beautiful example of what 3D printing and being open source can mean for society.

Another great cause we support is 'https://www.ultimaker.com/blogs/news/2014/08/15/world-s-first-3d-printed-petition-to-help-save-elephants' (Translated: Get off the elephant). It puts its focus on elephants being abused for the entertainment for tourists.

Along with one of our community http://www.rooiejoris.nl/store/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=4 we are printing a life size elephant with names engraved of those who sign the petition.

A place where we interact with our community members and whats a big part of being open source is our forum, a platform for our users where they can come together and share their knowledge and experience. For new users this is also a great place to gather information or get inspired. We take pride in hosting such an active platform which is accessible for everyone.

Prosumer printer of the year

Ranging from the techie neighbor down the street to the highest animation studio that has been working on various hollywood blockbusters the Ultimaker 2 has been serving everyone’s need.

The Ultimaker 2 has proven to be very reliable and can print at unmatched resolutions of 20 micron, speeds up to 300mm/s and with its heated bed it is capable to print almost all available materials. Through these features the Ultimaker is a match for almost every prosumer.

Together with DUS-architects we have helped putting together a large printer called http://3dprintcanalhouse.com/ that is now working on printing an actual canal house. Together with http://www.xyzworkshop.com/ we have changed the landscape of fashion with our open source https://www.youmagine.com/designs/inbloom-dress-by-xyz-workshop/and established http://www.julianhakes.co.uk/index.html within the fashion industry are prototyping with the Ultimaker 2.

The Ultimaker even managed to reach out to the far lands of India where http://www.damaged-design.com/ found a solution in Ultimaker to give shape to his fantasy and create his own famous Ronin-figurines. (interesting fact: we will be showing a 3 foot(!!) tall Ronin figurine at 3D printshow in London and at the Maker Faire in New York!)

Even though the Ultimaker 2 has only been launched September 2013 it already has a track record that shows it is one of the professionals favorite to work with.

I think that UM - despite the teething issues experienced in a growing company, and perhaps because they are human, has managed to tread that tricky line between offering a prosumer and a tinkerer's product.

Sander - I only disagree with your focus on the UM2 as the UM Classic is still a blistering machine - the more I use it and push my knowledge, the more I am amazed at how an assembly of laser cut ply and some vitamins can produce such a wide variety of outputs.

I have a 3dhub and through feature request like the fairphone case, and UM's own certification test pieces I have had my cnowledge of printing and materials pushed to its limit - and just when I think I have dialled the printer in, a new challenge comes along that pushes the settings even harder (moving parts) and shows me that there are even more depths to the capability.

So far I am not attracted to the UM2 as I love the hands on of the UM1 but am happy that the company continues to support us tinkerers (so looking forward to the heated bed ) and I really hope that UM stays with this approach (there are pitfalls for those who don't - witness the large number of paperweights that MB is shipping!)

I also love the Kammermaker - saw it in operation - and think this kind of research and development is essential to the whole area of 3d printing and UM's development.

No worries; The R&D team is fully staffed with tinkerers. The Original has a warm spot on our heart (and it's a great platform to test improvements!.

Thank you for your reply and taking the time to write it.

I totally agree with that the Ultimaker Original is a great machine, I always refer to it as a 'working-horse' because when you are a little bit familiar with it, it just always works.

The focus on the Ultimaker 2 in my write up was not meant to disadvantage the Ultimaker Original but I also have to face the facts that the Ultimaker 2 seems to be more popular.

As Nallath confirms and I can also agree on, our focus will stay on both machines / directions.

It is part of Ultimaker!
