I don't have much luck with the E3D ... finally found the energy to get the thing unclogged (which only worked by taking it apart and  by heating it up without the hot end cooling....) and started to put it back together again... securing the nozzle at 250c was not even putting a lot of force on it and the nozzle just broke of ... original E3D 0.4 nozzle....

 

Finally had some time to look at it again. I managed to save the block but had to damage the heat-break thread to get it out, after the heat-break was out i got the half nozzle out with the tool GR5 suggested. Already received spare parts, spend a shitload on E3D stuff so hopefully I'll get it working...

edit; ohh, and the E3D guy's told me i must have used too many force as there material would never fail :)but they gave me 18 pounds anyhow ... which is basically a heat-break + shipping..

    Any luck with the e3d ultiarjan? I'm trying again, e3d sent me a new kit, and i got a spare heat break for the no.2 unit. I have updated my design to improve the cooling, and designed the second head to be height adjustable. So, the e3d....I have managed to print a robot, but whenever I try a longer print, I get a blockage still. Its super frustrating as i'm convinced the design is good. I am trying now with a different bowden tube (the other one i was trying had large ID). If that fails, the last thing i'll try before giving up, is a drop of oil in the bowden tube. I'm reluctant to do this as not sure if it will affect the strength of the prints. So close yet so far!

    I wonder why you'd prefer rails over shafts & linear bearings.

     

    I'm playing with the same idea, basically the H setup like in the Builder. I'm just still in doubt if I want to go for two motors/heads mounted on it (like the BCN sigma) or to stick with the magnetic mounts... I think I'll start playing with both ideas in CAD first.

     

    Even one week after finishing the strike German Post is not up-to-date with its delivery and so I'm still waiting for belts and pulleys. Otherwise I'd soon be able to report on a first test of the x/y gantry. I went for linear rails basically because I'm lazy (simply bolts on to laser cut metal parts) and many printer manufacturers use them as well.

    Have not jet had the time to test again, was planning to design a height adjustable mount this weekend but something came up and I wont be home all weekend... It will have to wait again...

    I was wondering about the retraction that seems to cause the pla to get stuck in the heat break, I can set the normal retraction to 2 mm, but we should probably also set the retraction at the end of a print (and tool change) very low ? Please let me know what you tried and your results...

    And I wonder if things get easier if we try with pet or XT ?

    Ok, so I don't want to jinx it, but I seem to have a working setup. I was tearing my hair out over it yesterday, and tried one last thing before giving up. The key seemed to be for me, adding a few drops of oil. I pulled the bowden out of the e3d, added two or three drops of oil, and put it back together. I've printed a couple of 2h plus prints so far, and not had a failure. To say i'm happy would be an understatement! This is with PLA by the way, can't see XT being a problem now either. I'll keep updating. Just printed my tool holder, not quite right so tweaked it a bit, and now printing again. Fingers crossed the e3d system is close to being complete! Nylon and PEEK prints coming up!!

    PS my retraction is also at 2mm

    Any problems with the larger retraction between prints? Can you do a cold pull pull / atomic? At what temp?

    I've not needed to do any atomic pulls, no blockages yet (fingers cross i won't get any more). Not sure on the retraction question...I daren't change anything now its working! I'll get the setup complete and working (with the two heads), then try adjusting reaction settings.

    So tonight I'm ready to do the repeat accuracy test with one head (park and resume). Can someone give me some instruction on how to edit the gcode? I know to do it in text edit with lookup and replace commands, but not sure where to insert etc. Also, how did you find the right coordinates for the head parking? From the ulticontroller? and finally, what is the 'F' command in the gcode before the XY coordinates?

    I can't help you with the important answers but "F" stands for feedrate and is in mm/minute so it is 60X larger than mm/sec. For example 50mm/sec is a F3000.

    It's the requested speed of ALL axes but since all moves are linear and E axis (extruder) moves the smallest amount the extruder rarely actually moves at the feedrate unless it is moving by itself.

    For a park and resume test I'd insert the gcode every layer change. There should be some comments in the generated gcode which indicate a new layer. And yes, I figured out the commands using the ulticontroller.

    Also, how did you find the right coordinates for the head parking?

     

    I started by just trying with manual created Gcode, getting closer step by step, this was a pain ... I later did it by controlling the printer directy from Simplify3D, you can just enter lines of Gcode and the head moves directly. There are free alternative, I believe "pronterface" ? but I never used it..

    Also in Simplify3D you can automatically have the change code inserted into the code, I think I explained on around page 27 of this thread (if memory serves me well...).

    So in the gcode, I did a look up for ';LAYER', and inserted the above. This works fine too. However when it uses the above code, after going back to the print, it does a huge rapid retraction, maybe 20-40mm or something, its crazy. I can't work out why its doing it, can anyone here help?

    Ok now I understand my mistake. It appears that the extrusion code is cumulative, so when it retracts for example by 2mm, it goes from 56mm (cumulative) to 54mm, then back to 56 after the X/Y steps have been completed. So the question is then, how on earth do you manually add retractions into gcode in cure?

    Cheers I had a look at that, but i'm using cura and just for now want to manually add the code with retraction, that the bit i'm super struggers with.

    Cura has retraction for dual extruders at least the non-wipeout-style-new-beta

    also Simplify3D lets you specifically set the retract setting for toolchange

    Indeed simplify3d has everything to make this dual extrusion work. Specially since the last 3.0 version. I'm getting soo sweet prints. Well not sweet but nice since I have a banana rod :D but it does the job

    Wait a minute... if i get you right, this is just a test for your tool changer.

    You want to achieve a tool change on every layer (independent of any toolchange command).

    And you're looking for an easy way to integrate a retraction (without the need to struggle with the current E-position), right?

    My suggestions are:

     

    • you definitly don't want to zero the e-position between layers... :)- remove the "G92 E0" lines - that's the main source of your problem

    • if possible - remove the "G1 E..." commands too and use firmware retractions instead "G10" resp. "G11"

    • or switch on (temporary) relative positioning ("G91 G1 E-2.5 G90" resp. "G91 G1 E2.5 G90")

     

    This should do the trick.

    Feels more like slowprototyping the last weeks, but at least there's a little progress...

    The top & bottom part can slide a few mm for height adjustment, and fixed in place with the 2 screws. The E3D head is fixed in the bottom part, so fans always stay i at the same height vs the nozzle. Design is based on the original E3D fanholder (the .step is on thingiverse) I made it a bit stronger ;) and one side broke during mounting... XT is rather brittle... I'm starting to think more & more I should start printing ABS ...

    I just quickly drew the fanducts, actualy its version2, the first ones limited the airflow to much... curious to see how they will perform during printing..

    I don't mean to offend, but the design IS kind of breakaway; doesn't really look like an issue with material properties. You could make those tabs a bit thicker. Turning them by 90 deg might not be a bad idea as well (not sure if there is enough space, though).

    ha ha, no offense taken at all...failure is just part of learning something..... but the tabs are not the issue, the side that clamps over the cooling ribs broke of as it's bending outwards during mounting.... I'm sure it would be no problem in PLA or ABS as it's a bit more flexibel, XT really is brittle.

    I did just rotate the tabs to be able to make the sides a bit thinner (to make them more flexible during mounting), but it also makes the mounting of screws easier. I'll try to do another print in XT tomorrow...

    Thanks for the suggestions guys. Tinkergnome, i'll give that a go tonight. I did try using the G10 G11 commands, but for some reason they didn't work. Does the gcode need a reference in it somewhere for the standard retract length at the beginning for it to work?

    All in all though, sounds like simplify3d is the way to go with this setup for full functionality, at least until Cura catches up (if the ultimaker team find these developments interesting enough). I'll start using simplify3d once i've confirmed the repeat accuracy.

    Ultiarjan, what settings are you using for XT? I found layer adhesion wasn't very good until I started to print around 248 degrees. But yea, its a little more brittle. However I've printed flexible clip on parts without issue.

    A quick photo of my (now tested and working!) setup with one extruder for now. I'm printing the height adjustable unit tonight which will sit on the back right of the machine.

        Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface.
