I know this sounds rudimentary but it's convenient to see the current Z-Axis height on the printer's display and go look up the layer view this way in Slic3r. Since Cura only seems to show the exact layer number when looking at layer view, I have to calculate the layer number from the current height and layer height setting. Maybe this is already a setting to change but I can't seem to find it. Currently running Cura 2.3.1...
