I may have figured it out - the diameter makes a difference for certain printers. The generated gcode is different when using a Ultimaker 2 for example.
This doesn't explain why it doesn't make a difference in other printers, but if a calibrated flow ultimately overrides filament diameter then I guess the question is moot.

Cura 4.5 with an Ender 3 Pro.
With the default 0.16mm profile I get the same gcode generated regardless of what I set the material diameter to (tried with at least with 1.70mm vs 1.75mm).
A quick search shows many have the same issue. On the other hand, many confirm that it does make a difference in the E values generated. Do we know why there's a discrepancy here?
I have calibrated my flow anyway, so I suppose this doesn't (or even shouldn't?) make a difference really, but I would like to know whether there is any value in measuring an average filament diameter when using a new filament if it doesn't actually do anything.
Cura settings: Improving naming and descriptions

How about a mapping between Cura settings and the "popular alternatives"?
When I come across a tutorial or guide that's, for example, written by someone who uses simply3d, it takes a little bit of further research to understand what settings the article is talking about.
A searchable table that maps "vase mode" to "spiralize outer contour" would be pretty useful in those circumstances.
