What drivers are you using? I have been working on this issue for the past few days. My board uses A4988 Allegros. There is a resistance there that needs to be shorted to get rid of the issue. If you look into the documentation it would be Rsoc. Just short it down and the driver will stop missing steps and creating the ripples. Noise will increase though.
