  1. Hello everyone. The Thursday prior to Columbus Day I pitched the school's Technology Program to the 6th Grade, which consists of 41 students. From that I have 8 students who are participating in it. We will have alternating meetings to learn about electronics and 3D printing. Our first 3D printing class is tomorrow. I plan on teaching the basics of printers and then on to 3D printing. I will have them help unbox, set-up, and calibrate the Ultimaker 2+. I will ask them to select a 3D print from the Ultimaker supplied memory card and start it. While it is printing, I will introduce them to Tinkercad and they will start to learn how to use it. While they learn about Tinkercad, we will discuss 3D modeling and ideas for their own first prints. Wish me luck
  2. Well, a couple of weeks ago I finally unpacked the Ultimaker 2+! I set it up, calibrated the build plate, and did some test prints. I thought it looked awesome in the dark that I took some pictures to share. I am also including pictures of the test prints: two prints came out pretty well, and another had stop printing due to a material jam in the feeder. I will post about the material jam in another post. The prints are some from the memory card which Ultimaker included with the printer. Enjoy!
  3. When St. Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Academy was awarded a 3D printer from Ultimaker I had several questions which needed answers before accepting their gift. Liz took the time to call me back and answer my questions. She also followed-up with an e-mail which had a list of software we can use to create 3D models. Some of the resources also included free online choices. During our talk she mentioned she could visit once we were set-up. I think I will take her up on that offer. It will be great for the students! The launch of the Ultimaker Education website looks great. I look forward to working and collaborating with the other Pioneers and the Ultimaker Community to make this a success. I want to thank Liz and Laura for their time and patience.
  4. Towards the end of June, parents had an opportunity to meet the new principal of St. Joseph High School in Brooklyn, NY. Due to a family emergency, me and my wife did not plan to attend. The night before the meeting a reminder e-mail was sent out to parents. After a discussion with my wife, we decided we were able to attend the meeting. At the parent meeting, the new principal introduced herself. She also outlined some plans for the future of St. Joseph High School. One item she highlighted was her background with 3D printing and how she was in contact with a company to bring 3D printing to the high school. Personally, this interested me. That night I went home and e-mailed the principal and made an inquiry as to the company which was gifting the school and how would I go about doing something similar for the school which I already had an electronics after-school program established. Not only did I receive a response from the new principal that same night, I received two of them. The first e-mail response included the company’s name, which you have probably already guessed is Ultimaker, and the second e-mail response included a link to the application for the Ultimaker Pioneer Program, along with the information that the application deadline was the very next day. It was approximately two weeks after the application submission that I heard from Liz and Laura about my acceptance into the Ultimaker Pioneer Program. After consulting with St. Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Academy’s principal, I went ahead and accepted to participate in the program. The new principal of St. Joseph High School is Caroline Latham, a fellow Pioneer. I want to take this opportunity to thank Caroline Latham for taking the time to communicate with a parent and for offering her assistance as I embark on the 3D printing journey. I want to thank Ultimaker for giving me, and the students of St. Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Academy, this wonderful opportunity to participate in the Ultimaker Pioneer Program.
