Ailurocaster

I've been using Cura for a week or two now, and with every print, I encounter the same problem. After each layer approximately, the extruder will stop moving and simply sit in place, still extruding. The excess filament from this error causes large and hideous bumps, blobs and zits that interfere with the extruder arm. I'm worried that this could be damaging the extruder head as it runs over these imperfections, and I wish to be printing things that actually look remotely similar to the digital model instead of an object with Deadpools facial features plastered all over it. If anyone knows how to put an end to this, it will be greatly appreciated!
