  1. Hi guys, 

     

    So I was able to resolve extruder issue. The problem is when defining custom filament in Cura. I was using PPLA material. Think I am doing the smart thing by creating a custom Cura profile and choosing PPLA as its Material, I actually wasn't. The issue is that Printer does not have any PPLA profile in it. In printer settings when loading PPLA to Material Station bay B, I selected Custom > PLA. This caused mismatch with Cura print profile. When I changed Cura profile to use Custom PLA instead, it worked.

    Hi @ctbeke, I am using custom PLA with S5 bundle pro. I manually added custom filament print profile in cura and loaded the Custom PLA roll in Material station by choosing custom PLA settings. When I print the project form USB, it gives unknown material warning although it shows the material is connected to AA core. When I print however it says "Please load the material" then aborts if I ignore it. That doesn't happen with Tough PLA Black that came with the printer. Normally it pulls the filament all the way up to nozel when I start printing a project from USB after loading it just like above.

     

    When I try printing with cloud, it gives error on printer display "Please reconfigure the printer to start next job. Extruder1: unknown unknown (unknown)."

     

    Is that to do with the above connectivity issue? Do we have a solution for this yet?

    @amitmonash : it is competely doable to use 1.75mm filament on a Ultimaker as soon as you have hacked the filament pushing mechanism.
    I don't know for a UM5, but I did that on a UM2 and a UM3 without problem and they both work very well now with either 1.75mm or 2.85mm filament which gives much more choice as they ate not stuck to only use 2.85mm.

     

    So just to be clear on this @Anar, my understanding is I need to :

    1. Change extruder accessories in printer that will allow for any filament size.

    2. Change Material settings in Cura to create custom material that has (1,75) as filament size.

     

    Does it have impact on Print Profile like retraction rate, filament overflow rate, hot end temperature etc.

    Is there a video link that I can follow?

    Seems like a very late reply, but I just bumped across your post while finding an answer myself:

    I don't think so you are doing anything wrong, but 1.75mm is not supported by Ultimaker printers as far as I know. Hope someone can guide better.

     

     

  5. You are absolutely right Greg, changing the export resolution in Fusion 360 made a difference.

    As you can see in image below, upper ring has high resolution export and hence smaller segments.

    Setting that up in Fusion 360 is a bit tricky, but it is possible as per the post below, you have to export them individually:

  6. Funny I did an oopsy, just bought a locally made shiny new 1.75mm filament in excitement and it came very quickly in post as well. As I was about to put the filament in my wonderful and highly engineered 3d printer S5 bundle pro material station, I realized that the printer is not designed to handle the filament!

     

    I have tried googling it and checking the Ultimaker Community for this but seems like I have come across some old topics.

    I want to use standard Ultimaker Tough Black PLA along with 1.75mm (different color) filament using dual extruder for my project.

    Anyone has solved this problem? Or does it mean and end to a wide range of filaments that are only available in 1.75mm and I will have to buy a cheap china made 3d printer for it.

    It's  shame such a high quality almost fully automated printer is beaten by just the width of filament.

     

    PS: tried adding custom material with 1.75mm dia, but it throws a warning:

    Does anyone know if there is a compatible extruder for this?

  7. Hi,

     

    I am strugling to identify the issue here.

    My Fusion 360 model looks smooth, however when I import it in Cura, I see the vrtical wall segments.

    I have reduced the maximum resolution which has worked in my previous projects but they were small as comared to this one.

    From my experience, if you see any defect in cura slicing (preview) mode, it will most definately appear in final print as well.

    I have added my test model here. If anyone has come across this before, please share your experience.

    Poor layer adhesion and a resultant failure of a printed part is the most popular failure mode of FDM.  A lot of research has gone into getting layers to adhere to each other better.

    It is necessary to get the first layer to adhere to the bed (popular problem) and then get the subsequent layers to adhere one-on-another.  I don't see any way to "separate" them later.  The layers are effectively super-glued together (at least that's the plan).

     

    Printing multiple models on the build plate would give you numerous stencils at once and there would be no need to "separate" them.  That would also allow you to go to a 2 layer thick stencil using .4 layer height.

     

    Thanks Greg, that is a limitation. In an ideal world, it should be like cake icing just comes out of nozzle, deposits on build plate and solidifies 🙂

    For my requirement, layer and bed adhesion should be minimum so I can easily separate layers. Getting the path right and smooth extrusion is more important.

    Printing stacked layers gives me more layers and hence more prints per cycle as compared to side-by-side.

    Well I guess I will have to experiment when I get my printer with different temperatures and materials. I believe some combination should work.

     

    When people can build concrete 3d printed houses, I think I can do it at much smaller scale and push the boundaries a little bit.

     

    But thanks for heads up and knowledge, it will certainly help me!

    Greg, I am not locked in on dimensions at this stage, probably to start with will take 0.8 nozel and layer height 0.8 as well. The x and y axix can vary depending on the content. Once successful will narrow down to smaller sizes. Thanks!

    Thanks Nallath, that is very close to what I am looking for. All I need to do now is to figure out z axis. Should be able to test out when I get my printer.

    I am new to 3d printing and in the process of purchasing s5, will take a month or so. In the interim I am exploring my options to ensure what I am trying to achieve is possible in Cura.

    This might sound unusual, but I want to print single layer of artwork and want to make sure that the layer path is not line by line in x or y axis, but continuous line path defined by shape I want to print.     Once that is achieved, I will stack multiple layers of the same in z axis. Want to make the whole process automated. So once set, it should print the whole stack. Once printed, these layers will be separated, kind of making wireframe/stencil.

    Is that possible?
