  1. But it seems like Cura wants to pull in certain Digital Factory settings. It is also duplicating each normally connected printer as a "cloud" printer as well so my list essentially has a full set of duplicates. Some features (camera) are available on the cloud if the "cloud version" is selected, yet you can't tell which on is a "normal connected" printer and which one is a "cloud" printer until you select it and then see the tiny blue and white icon at the corner of the name.

I think I will be dropping Digital Factory asap.

  2. I have been using UM3s since 2018 and I liked how Cura worked, I liked the groups, I liked seeing all the printers in on spot with all the jobs printing and those waiting to be printed. Now it seems like half of that has been farmed out to Digital Factory and Cura has been cut off at the knees. What am I missing? I am reading they are all in on cloud printing but Cura is on my machine, I'm in the office next to the printers, why am I feeling like I'm having to switch between Cura and Digital Factory for information on the printers sitting in front of me? What am I not seeing?

  3. I have been troubleshooting this issue more this morning and decided to reset the printers to factory settings and try using just a WiFi connection. The printer was stable and able to be seen by Cura all morning. I then connected the LAN cable and tried switching the connection and the printer was immediately lost. Kind of running out of ideas except to bring a few printers home and see if they behave similarly on another network.

  4. I don't expect a solution but I figured I would lay out what I have happening and see if anyone has suggestions.

I manage a makerspace at a university and we have a workgroup of 4 UM3 connected through LAN, each with their own dedicated IP address. I have managed this group for about 5 years with only an occasional issue, until this week.

The group of 4 UM3, initially they were on a mix of older firmware but with the issues, I updated them all to the latest "maintenance" firmware to rule out any incompatibility problems.

I first noticed an issue when a printer was labeled as "Unreachable" in Cura 4.13.1 under the monitor tab. I restarted the printer and it would initially boot, show the Ultimaker logo, and then just a black screen and green ring around the controller circle. I let it sit for an hour but nothing. Eventually after a lot of experimenting, I realized that if I unplugged the LAN cable, the printer would start up as normal. I then plugged the LAN cable back in and it showed up in Cura, but...later it was unreachable again.

That is when I thought maybe it was the differing firmware so I updated them all to 5.3.0.

After the updates, they still wont boot with the LAN cables plugged in but I can unplug the LAN, boot them and plug them back in. Now they are all unreachable in CURA BUT I can still click on the camera and get a live video from each printer so the network must be working somewhat?!?!  If I click on Manage Printer button in Cura, it launches a web browser and then I choose "Print Jobs" tab in Ultimaker Digital Factory, they all show "This printer currently can't be reached" but once in a while, one will connect and then disconnect again almost immediately.

My next step is to maybe take them home or somewhere where I can put them on another network to see if it's a network issue or a printer group but I really don't want to go through that amount of troubleshooting if someone had a better idea. I plugged my laptop into the LAN cable and my computer got out into the network without an issue so I don't think it's that. I was also thinking of trying to use the WIFI grouping but setting up that in the University is a bit of an issue since me have to register each device and I don't think I could keep a specific IP address for each printer or at least the amount of work it would entail seems greater than figuring out why the LAN that was rock solid for 5 years now won't work.

  5. I have 4 UM3 and 3 of them are running the exact same configuration of .4 nozzles, Generic PLA in Extruder 1 and Breakaway in Extruder 2. I have my class learn to use the printers and CAD software by creating and printing a key fob. When they are finished designing it, they open Cura and I have showed them how to slice it and print it to a networked printer. They choose "Print over network" and then "Automatic". When I launch Cura, it shows the queue and the jobs say waiting for "First available" but only one (sometimes 2) printers are printing while the third sits idle. I open up Manage in browser and it shows they are all waiting for one specific printer. What is going on here and what can I change to make sure the load of printing is distributed evenly?

To investigate further, I went and sliced a fob and chose "First available" and it went right to the idle printer and started warming up. Weird behavior...

  6. Has anyone dumped Lulzbot Cura and successfully just run Cura for their Lulzbot printers? Wanting to simplify things and trying to keep track of various settings and manage materialas as well as printer settings is a bit of a hassle. Any advice?

  7. Solved. The model "came in" to Cura at some weird angles due to how it was designed. I took the STL back into Fusion (I think you could use Tinkercad as well) and reoriented the model. Once that was done, I brought it back into Cura and support blocker behaved like normal.

Well, we don't always know all the flows that people use. That's why i'm asking. I personally found the dialog to be insanely annoying. Also note; I'm not an engineer that is working on Cura Connect, so I don't have all the information regarding this.

It's not just the dialog that's the issue of course. What can happen is that you force something to be printed with a certain printer, but it simply can't ever print it. This causes all kinds of UX issues down the stream (and make the rest of the architecture a lot more complicated).

Thanks for the reply, I will hold off on dismantling our Cura Connect group for one or two more updates to Cura and if the dialog box doesn't return, I will break out each printer on it's own and figure out some new method that works for beginners as well as more experienced users.

Well, if you don't care about the color, the idea is that a user selects generic. Generic will match with any color on the printer. If you select blue PLA, it will only be printed on a machine that actually has blue PLA.

Some do care about color but we use large rolls of ColorFabb filament that aren't official Ultimaker Filament so we just use the generic PLA choice. Wouldn't they otherwise have add each printer individually and then pick the exact color they wanted on that specific printer if they didn't know any better? My goal running the Makerspace is to lower the hurdles so people can get on the machines easier and not have to get into the details of which printer is which IP and are they in a workgroup or not. This update seems like a step backwards to me in that sense but obviously I do not know all the factors or requirements that go into displaying that dialogue box after you hit "Print over network".

I would hope that this feature could be added back if possible but if some of the people at Ultimaker acknowledge that they don't understand the logic of having this option then maybe I need to rethink how we are doing things in our space.

What is your specific use case? I never quite understood the logic of having the feature in in the first place (eg; why not just have them all as a group of one if you always want to select manually?)

This is a university makerspace. New users can just connect to the host and then can print or monitor the 4 printers. Each printer has a different color filament and some have glass beds, some have flexible beds, so if you are printing something and want the same color filament again, you just select that printer. If you don't care, you can just select automatic.

What is the option you are suggesting? What do you mean as a group of one? Would they need to add each printer individually with its own IP address? Not saying your idea isn't feasible, just trying to figure out the logistics.

    Printers

  11. Updated to 4.3, we have 4 UM3 on a network group run by a single host. In 4.2 and previous when you selected Print Over Network, you then had a choice of automatic or you could choose a specific printer. That option is now missing in 4.3, hopefully that can be added back with a patch? As it stands now, it just starts printing on a printer without giving you a choice.
