  1. Thanks for the reply! One of the issues is i am just terrible at leveling the bed, as i don't really know what signs i'm looking for but i think i've got it alright, however all corners are leveled but about half way down the right side the lines are coming out really jagged?

Also i hear my extruder clicking, when it does this, material doesn't stick for a few seconds and it builds up by the head?

my initial layer thickness is 0.3

initial layer line width is 100%

    shell thickness is 0.8 .

Yes i can drop the temperature to 205 after the first layer, i could do a bit more probably but the filament looks the best at this temperature, but its just getting this first layer down clean, then its all good!

Thanks for the reply! appreciate it

  2. Its on 3 out of 4 corners. What i think it may be is when it first starts it does some random bits of the first layer really fast and the head just moves around really quickly and nothing sticks, then it starts printing normally will some plastic on the nozzle which causes these problems.

Why does the printer do these random bits first? I'm printing the bottom layer at 15 but it looks like the first part is around 40. Hope someone can help:)

  3. Hello community!

Okay i am printing this phone case, and as you can see from these pictures, the bottom layer is getting ruined in some places.

I am using an ultimaker 2, and my settings are:

    0.06 height layer

    0.8 shell thickness

and bottom layer speed was 15mm p/s

    Printing at 215

the filament is the rep rap uv reactive PLA,

    anyone have any advice?

    Thank you!12026706_1060289883995567_2121917999_n.thumb.jpg.303830072b78220e373a5a428b7e8205.jpg

  4. Hello community,

Okay for some reason the last few days my ultimaker 2 has been playing up, nothing is sticking to the build plate and its driving me crazy.

    What i have tried:

re leveling (like a hundred times)

    cleaning the build plate

    using the glue stick/hair spray

The Normal/high quality/ ultra quality settings on cura

    build plate at 50 - 60 degrees

a few different types of PLA (which have worked fine previously)

Basically what is happening is it isn't sticking and everything is just getting dragged by the nozzle, i don't know what else to suggest, anyone have any ideas?

    Thank you very much!

  5. Its by the same people as 3dsmax. 3DSMAX is available as a free trial so you can just download that off their website if you want to go the legal route. Then in 3dsmax you import a vector (ai file) from illustrator (exported as illustrator 8 from illustrator i think), and click extrude from the modifier menu on the right, choose the amount from the slider. Job done. VERY EASY and works well with cura.

sorry i have been extremely busy,, okay i have got 3ds and illustrator. What is a vector file? what do you mean export as illustrator 8 ?

    thank you!

  6. Be curious to see the wire frame of your model, would be easy to see the problem then. If not, just draw it again in illustrator and re-extrude it. looks like a very simple model to create. If you know 3dsmax this should take you 2 mins. You may need to tesselate to add polys, but perhaps not.

Or just go into maya, highlight everything and select combine from the menu (its like attach in 3DSmax but easier to apply just by highlighting everything and going into the menu). That will merge all elements (as far as cura will be concerned) so should print fine?

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately i don't really know what i am doing with 3ds so cant do much on there, what is this maya you are talking about though? sounds very interesting!

    Thank you

  7.

Still not working, anyone got any other advice?

I also have no clue about blender and 3ds, but i want to second this approach:

...fastest solution is to redraw with closed lines.

I'm pretty sure that you have a hidden (inner) wall in your model (marked on your screenshot) and you have to redesign it in some way without such a wall... (you have to remove all internal faces)

Thank you so much! fixed the problem! really appreciate it, and everyone else for their advice, THANKS!

  8. Still not working, anyone got any other advice? or has someone got netfabb pro which may be able to fix it where i can send you the model? really don't know what else to try, i needed tis sorted last night and was up most of the night, and been trying to sort it all day, and its driving me crazy!

Thank you for all your help i really appreciate it

  9. As far as I can see it's a solid object,

so, best is to redraw just the outline of the shape, and making sure all lines are attached to each other, and then extrude to the correct height.

or perform a bolean to connect all the solid parts as one part.

this fault happens when there is a very slight gap somewhere, and the fastest solution is to redraw with closed lines.

and sometimes certain programs are not good at exporting STL files, and create gaps.

don't use the latest Cura, just grab an older one, and experiment with the "Fix Horrible"settings

I will try give it a go, i am really not that good with blender though so not really sure what i am doing, thanks for the help! really appreciate it

  10. try and use use 15.02.01 it would print stuff that the others just wouldnt even load. Worth a shot, or take it in zbrush and dynamesh it. It will close all holes, but you'll need to tighten it after. Or take it to maya and close holes and reexport. This version of cura doesnt care about normals.

That didn't work im afraid, thanks for the help though!

  11. Your model is wrong. It's not cura doing this to you, it's blender / 3ds max doing this to you. Try viewing the model in cura 15.04 in x-ray mode. If there are red areas, the model is wrong (we haven't ported that mode to the new cura yet, it's a WIP).

Take a look at this excellent writeup about non-manifold meshes; http://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/7910/what-is-non-manifold-geometry

Thanks for this, i'm trying to follow the procedures but having a lot of trouble, have you done this before?

Because i cant do this: Loose geometry (elements without any other connecting elements) can be selected with 3D view > Header > Select > Loose geometry. Note that it only selects vertices, edges, and faces depending on the current selection mode.

  12. Thanks for the replies! still really struggling, there are red areas in x ray mode.

I have tried netfab and it hasn't fixed them unfortunatly.

I have tried flipping the normals in blender, i think i was doing it right, and nothing was changing.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  13. Hello everyone!

Right i am printing a object with my logo on it, i want it to cut out of the object and this was done on both blender and 3ds max. When on Cura on the normal mode its just how i want it, the logo looks like its going to cut out on the object, but when you go into layers mode it does the opposite, cuts out whats round the logo and fills in the logo??

If anyone can shed some light onto why it is doing this, that would be great,

    thank you very much!

  14. Whats wrong with using PLA, I mean if you're not gonna leave it laying about for ages in the sun, then i don't see a problem, seeing as you shouldn't leave your phone lying around in the sun anyways. At least you don't need to worry about warping, and PLA prints stronger on the Ultimaker as well from what I've noticed. Just my experience.

Someone just printed a case if you go to print in the menu, its the print of the month or whatever, done in PLA and looks very clean if i say so myself.

I'm using a UV sensitive material which i can only obtain in ABS, and i would rather learn with ABS and use both, than learn with PLA and then get stuck on ABS, thanks for the reply!

  15. Hi Luke

Hard to answer it in one go, i'll try:

    - the face that is touching the buildplate is printed on the glass surface, right? So it would be rather glossy and smooth anyway?

    - you would print it standing up or design it that way that it still has a flat bottom to be placed on the bed.

    - can't really comment on ABS as I only print PLA but I guess heated bed and gluestik / brim would def. help and also preventing the model from warping

    - Look at the instructions for the fairphone cases (Ultimaker specific) and also the models on their website, that will give you a great first look at how it's done efficiently. You can donwload and print them no problem (after finetuning the settings as described)

    http://shop.fairphone.com/zubehor/3d-printed-cases/community4-1-1.html

I hope that will get you started.

Excellent! thank you very much for the reply, i really appreciate it! I'll have a look at the link as well:)

Yes its printed on a glass surface but its a bit patchy in areas which is a bit annoying.

I will try doing some standing up,

Ye i am using an adhesive and brim but in some cases I'm still getting a warp unfortunately,

Thank you for the help though!

  16. Hello everyone, i am looking for as much advice and tips for printing phone cases.

So how to get the best quality?

How to get the face that is touching the build-plate as smooth as possible?

How to people print phone cases that go onto curved phones, as the back isn't flat?

Best way to stick it to the build-plate when using abs?

    Best way to reduce warping?

And if anyone has any experience with printing phonecases and have any information that might be of use to me please fire away!

    Thank you very much

    Luke
