  1. Gone to 100% infill overlap, added 1 mm3 of extra prime just for the heck of it and this is the result:

     

    In this print, all but one of the infill lines meet the wall. The joint that doesn't meet the wall appears to show the extra prime amount as a bit of a ball at the beginning of the infill line which is well away from the wall. The wall/infill joint right next to it shows the infill barely touching the wall in spite of the setting of 100% overlap

  2. Bowden tube has been replaced, couplers have been replaced, pressure advance has been re-calibrated and speeds have been reduced in case I got into volumetric limits of the Volcano hot end.

    On things like walls, I can see extrusion of material the instant the nozzle starts moving. While the 'starting' gap with infill has reduced with all the improvements, there is still a noticeable delay when doing infill between when the nozzle starts moving and when material is extruded.

    The nozzle is always moving as it should starting from the wall with the core issue being a delay between movement starting and filament coming out the nozzle.

    I am currently at 50% infill overlap and will go to 100% on my next test.

  3. The gcode (as per cura preview) does not show any issues.

    I have done a bunch more testing and I need to follow up on two items - I have a considerable amount of play between the bowden tube and the bowden coupler with the tube sliding in and out during retraction moves and I also need to re-calibrate the pressure advance setting. I will run another test print after this is done and post a follow-up tomorrow.

  4. I have run into an issue where infill lines in Cura 4.3 do not always go back to the wall surfaces.

    I have tried different infill patterns and this issue is present on all of them.

    I am printing 1 mm wide and 0.4 mm high at up to 60 mm/sec with a Volcano hot end. I am using a Duet wifi controller and have tried a variety of settings for pressure advance as there is a very long bowden tube.

    From all my testing, I am pretty certain that the issue is not related to pressure advance which was my first guess.

    What happens is that the infill line is started and there is a distinct and consistent delay between the physical move starting and extrusion happening.

    I can confirm that on non-infill lines, extrusion happens the instant that the printing move starts.

    The attached picture shows the issue although it might be a bit hard to see. The infill at the right edge of the model has the bottom line meeting the wall but the next line up doesn't meet the wall (overlap set at 50%)IMG_20191221_161631519_HDR.thumb.jpg.e8d074d79acc8badec262c245a3f05e1.jpg

     

    I suspect this issue may not be obvious with higher infill (currently 10%) or when line width is a more common 0.4 mm.

    Has anyone seen this issue ? Any solutions ?

     

  5. Well hot-damn ... I like it.... thank you very much for posting the idea about the template. It works a treat !

     

    The only down side of doing it this way is that if I revise the model I have to place the corner templates on every revision. Hopefully that will become very easy with practice.

  6. I call that a 'mickey mouse ear' and yes, I end up designing this into the model at the CAD level.

    What do you mean by 'circular template'?

    Your choice of the word 'template' seems to open up the possibility of some sort of fixed thing that you can just drop over the model rather than designing the circle into the CAD model ?

  7. Is there any way to make a brim two layers tall rather than just a single layer ?

    I find that when a model really wants to curl up, the brim separates right at the base of the model. A second layer of brim material would strengthen that junction.

    I have been designing my own brim in the model design phase but it would be nice if I could just make a brim two (or even three) layers tall

  8. This is on an Ubuntu machine.

    On initial install, Cura 4.4 seemed to work fine but at one point I switched between two machines I have configured and Cura crashed. Ever since then, I can't start up 4.4 at all. Possibly there was something in the machine profile that Cura 4.4 didn't like but of course it tries to start up with the same machine settings that crashed it in the first place.

    Both machine settings work under Cura 4.3

  9. I am running Cura 4.3 on a two extruder machine. Extruder 1 is used for the model, extruder 2 is used for support.

    I am trying to change the support interface pattern. If zig zag is selected, rather than the normal 45 degree pattern I get from every other zig zag selection, the pattern is 90 degree rotated (or an additional 45 degrees).

    Is there a setting someplace that I am not aware of that regulates the angle used in zig zag patterns ?

    The zig zag angle also doesn't seem to alternate orientation like it does on any other zig zag pattern.

    What am I missing ?

  10. I would like to send out a big THANK YOU to all the developers on this version! It is SOOOOO much better to be able to move the model around on the build plate (this was driving me nuts before) and it's amazing how handy the new feature is to put a designated face onto the build plate. When I first heard about that feature it was 'oh, ok', now it's 'holy cow is that ever handy'. I had no idea what I was missing.

    The issue with saving profiles on a second configured printer also went away - that was a biggy that made me avoid using one of my printers.

    The only aspect that is still a bit troubling is some of the sluggishness (for example when selecting an alternate printer or searching for a particular setting) but with a bit of patience and maybe some more computing power it isn't too bad.

  11. I believe that, other than the issue of selecting things, the remaining things are 'operator problems'.

    Keeping in mind that I am just a user, as far as I know Cura can't drop one thing onto the surface of another (excepting dropping a model on the build plate of course). IMHO this would be rather useless because how would you deal with anything that doesn't just sit on the surface.

    The way to do this is to create your model in two sections on the same drawing and export it in two STL files. When Cura combines them, they are combined as they are in the original model relative to the origin as specified in the model. This could be with the arrow key on the surface or embedded or a combination of the two.

    I hope that makes sense ....

    I do believe it is possible to combine two independent models into a group (never used that function) but that is rather inaccurate. I think when you talked 'group' you might have meant 'merge' which is what I assumed your post was about.

  12. I just tried to move an average sized object. I tried about 20 times before giving up and printing in the place that Cura decided for it.

    I have started to use the new feature on the lower left of the Cura main screen that names the prints on the build plate. This always selects the print and is quite handy. Alas, every time I clicked on either the center of the x/y/z arrows or on the arrow heads, the arrows would disappear. Eventually I gave up rather annoyed at the situation.

     

  13. Well,  not exactly ... 😞

    I deleted the empty profiles, started Cura and there was no error message about corrupt profiles (yeah)

    Then I changed an existing profile for the CR10 and exited Cura (crossed fingers)

    Then I opened up Cura again to find out that no, the profile had not actually updated and now I am seeing some more 'empty' profiles (crap)

    Then I decided to be stupid and deleted what seemed some odd profiles (custom_extruder_2_%232_pla_on_glass.inst.cfg as well as version 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 of the same) and closed down Cura.

    Crossed my fingers and started Cura .... oh crap !!!!!! Cura starts up and thinks it's a brand new installation ...... 😞

     

    Update:

    restored the configuration folder from backup and ..... yeah !!!!  we are back to the errors of the corrupt profiles.

    Deleted the empty profiles, change one data item of a profile, updated the profile and find out that Cura had created another 'empty' profile.

    Deleted the empty profile, loaded a different profile, changed one data value, updated the profile to incorporate the change and again Cura created an 'empty' profile.

    So, based on what I am seeing, I would say that Cura, instead of updating the correct profile with the new data, writes an 'empty' profile. So it creates the corrupt 'empty' profile and never actually updates the profile that I tried to update.

     

  14. Ok, let me try and give you a sequence of operations to reproduce the behaviour:

    Load Cura 4.2.1 on Ubuntu computer .... sorry for the long post that follows:

     

    Cura is configured for two different printers with one being a single extruder printer and one being a dual extruder printer

    I start Cura

    Cura starts (in this example) with the dual extruder printer active and the 'print settings' dialog open

    I change the layer height figure, the profile shows a star indicating an unsaved condition, I click on the star, I get the 'preferences' dialog , profiles sub dialog and I select 'update profile with current settings/overrides. The dialog indicates that the settings are saved (by graying out) and I close the 'preferences' dialog.

    I close Cura

    I open Cura again and verify that yes, the print settings dialog shows the changed layer height.

    BTW, Cura reports configuration errors with several profiles named 'creality_cr-10_empty, empty #2, #4 and #5 and asks me if I want to throw out all my configured profiles and printers. I dismiss the warning without resetting anything.

    I now switch the active printer from the current dual extruder version to a single extruder version.(creality cr10)

    Cura ponders life over this for a rather lengthy time and then shows the new selected printer.

    Again, the print settings dialog is open (but not on the custom profile that was last active but on the 'extra fine' canned profile

    I update the profile to one of my custom profiles, set layer height, update the profile, save the changes and Cura thinks it has saved the changes.

    I close Cura

    I open Cura

    I again get a message of configuration errors but this time the errors are for the creality cr 10 empty #2, #4,#6, #7 and #5 profiles (note that Cura is creating these empty profiles every time the creality printer is selected)

    The print settings dialog that opens up by default is one of the 'empty' profiles and not the profile that was last used.

    I select the profile that was last used but the layer height is not what was previously saved (it appears to be the settings of the 'empty' profile)

     

    .... and there we are .... hopefully that explains things.

    No actual models were loaded at any time.

    Let me know if you you want any log files (and let me know where to find them on a Linux box running Ubuntu)

     

    BTW, I didn't want to post this long song and dance if this was a known problem which is why I started with a minimum of information first.

  15. I can confirm that if you configure the materials on the top bar, they seem to propagate. Having said that, the whole system of materials (and to a lessor extent the profiles) is very confusing to me. It is totally non intuitive. Even after spending a couple hours of trying to figure things out, I eventually decided to give up - maybe future versions will improve that aspect of Cura.

    This mini rant applies to multiple extruder setups - I had no problems with single extruder operation but then I never used the 'material' portion. What I did was to create custom profiles with the material used in the profile name so it was easy to select the right profile based on the material used at the time (for example 'Amazon Basics PLA on glass'.

    I tried to make sense of the whole 'materials' and 'profile' system but the on-line documentation was no help.

    I am struggling with the very basic premise of separating materials and profiles. In my thinking a particular material has a particular profile and the two should not be separated like they are currently.

     

    I am sure there is a method to the madness the way Cura is designed and it is quite likely that I am using the system in away it never was designed for but I have not found anything that explains the way that this aspect of Cura 'should' be used. If anybody has a URL to a tutorial that explains the basics of how to use materials and profiles, I would appreciate a pointer to it.

    Little things like a single 'profile' selector box for two separate extruders confuses the hell out of me.

  16. I am running 4.2.1 and have two printers configured.

    Profiles update fine with one printer but when the other printer is selected, any updates made to the profiles will not be saved (although Cura thinks it has saved the changes).

    I also get corruption errors and every activation of the non-updateable printer seems to generate a custom profile 'empty'. It is this profile that generates the corrupt configuration errors.

    Cura does give the option of resetting but it warns that this will remove all profiles and printers and I really don't want to go through setting up everything again.

  17. I have selection problems as well as movement problems. It might take many attempts to click on the model before it gets selected. Once selected, the chances are 50/50 if clicking on the arrows or circles will get the desired action or if it simply ends in a de-selection of the model. Very frustrating !

    The issues seem to appear more often than in version 3.x but I can't be sure.
