  1. I am trying to upgrade 3.4.1 to 3.5. When I run Cura 3.4.1 it informs me that there is a new version but clicking on the 'download' button produces no action.

In order to upgrade to a newer Cura I would go to the official Cura download site and install the new version but configurations and profiles never carried across to the newly installed version. I didn't think this was a software issue as I was doing a new install in my mind. I have now been told that installing a new version 'should' copy all the old information from previous installs.

Sooo, is there a way that I can bring the profiles, configurations, settings etc from 3.4.1 to 3.5 ?

The only thing that does (if it works) is opening a webbrowser to https://ultimaker.com/en/products/ultimaker-cura-software

So if downloading Cura from that page is what you call "installing as a new version", there is no difference between that and "upgrading".

Yes, that is how I would install the new version. I would have thought that 'upgrading' would have brought all configurations and profiles from the earlier version to the new version. Installing from new as I do does not bring anything across from the old version.

  3. I did install 3.5 as a new version. I also just tried upgrading 3.4.1 - Cura ignored my attempt (clicking on the 'upgrade' button produced no response).

I will have to look into finding where the profiles are again (in Ubuntu 18) but if I recall the last upgrade mess correctly, just moving the profiles didn't work right and it also didn't copy the settings and printer configurations. It was a real PITA ?

  4. I just fired up Cura 3.5 .... turns out that the z-offset is working fine in 3.5! It also turns out that I can log in for a configuration backup under 3.5. I am now wondering if I should try to manually shift all my settings and profiles from 3.4.1 to 3.5 and be done with all the current problems ????

I should point out that the Cura 3.5 setup is default instead of the substantially customized 3.4.1. I don't know if that has a bearing on the z-offset somehow. Don't know why it should but stranger things ave happened.

IAlso I am not clear how @ahoeben you are adjusting this in firmware ? (I am using a 2+ BTW)

    ?

I am using Marlin for firmware and yes, I can adjust z offset in firmware but it involves running a plugin, downloading current parameters, changing the offset, saving and uploading the new value and then going back. It is WAY more involved then changing the value in Cura in an area where I need to change values anyway.

PETG took a chunk of my freshly installed glass plate before I realized that things were broken ?

I would switch to Cura 3.5 but at the moment the backup feature doesn't seem to be working (can't log in) and I use a lot of custom profiles and don't want to risk loosing them (again).

  6. Ahhhh, on looking at the g-code again I did indeed find the 'zoffsetprocessesd' string at the very top and the actual offset adjustment way further down than expected at <Layer1> at a z height of 0.6 mm (0.723 with the offset)

The code is included. z-offset is 0.123. Cura 3.41

Thank you very much for looking at this!

I must admit, I am a bit mystified why anybody would NOT use this feature. I find it essential to fine tune adhesion and the only other alternative is going through the EPROM settings which is much clumsier

  7. I have the z-offset plugin installed and am running cura 3.4.1 under Ubuntu 18.

It would appear that the z-offset functionality is broken under 3.4.1 as changing the value does not seem to affect the print in any way nor could I find anything in the g-code file that would suggest it is working.

I have removed and re-installed the plugin with no apparent change in behaviour.

Is the plugin broken ? Is anyone else using it successfully under 3.4.1 ?

    It worked fine under 3.3.1!

You can run them side-by-side. If 3.5 is not working out for you, you can switch back to 3.4. Cura 3.5 does not change your Cura 3.4 configuration, it just makes a copy of it (and upgrades that copy).

Thanks. Yes, that is what I am doing. I did not 'upgrade' though but simply install the new version in addition to the old version.

  9. I wonder if any thought has been given to having a comment field available in individual profiles. One example of the purpose would be to make a note such as :' Use PEI build plate' or, in another profile, 'Use clean glass build plate'. Maybe to make other specialized comments that are not a part of the standard profile settings such as a note about specialized pre or post print gcodes or what-have-you.

It's not a 'must have' but if it is an easy implementation it  would make things a bit easier than having to keep a special setup text file with all that information recorded in it.

  10. The current version, Cura 3.4.1, seems to import the profiles ok but there are a number of other issues that remain and that forced me to give up on the newer versions.

One example - the visibility data (what options are visible on the right side of the screen) is not brought across.

Another issue, the plugin manager can't connect to the server even though 3.3.1 run on the same computer works just fine.

It also seems that the octoprint configuration isn't carried across nor is the initialization g code for the printer.

Direct inter-operation with Freecad files doesn't work (that was my big incentive to upgrade)

None of these examples were researched in any way to see if this is just fat finger syndrome on my end. I just decided to stick with the 3.3 branch for now.

  11. Just tried to install the newest version of Cura. This is an upgrade from 3.31 for me.

On startup, 3.4 reported that several profiles were corrupt and asked if it could reset to factory defaults. This killed all profiles and printer initialization strings.

At this point even my 3.31 installation has the profiles destroyed (probably inadvertently by me trying to get around the problem)

I tried copying the old profile (for 3.3) over to the 3.4 folder but again Cura 3.4 reported errors/corruption. At the same time, 3.3.1 loaded the profiles just fine.

I am stuck and do not know how to get around this issue without recreating everything manually from scratch - an option that is not pleasant to think about!

  12. The object I was testing on was a square 30mm by 30 mm by 1 mm tall. If I increase he height to 2 mm, the resulting g-code shows the Z offset code at the right place but change the height of the model to 1 mm and the resulting g-code puts the Z offset code at the layer 1 level instead of the layer 0 level.

I am taking a wild guess here but maybe the issue is related to the number of layers generated ?  In other words it almost looks as if there needs to be a minimum number of layers before the z offset modification is inserted at the right spot. If there are fewer layers generated than the magic number, the z offset code is inserted at level 1 ......

    Very curious

  13. The plot thickens and stuff is getting even weirder ....

Ran the same model on Cura 3.3.0 Beta with exactly the same behaviour BUT ran another small item and it produced perfectly fine g-code.

I have attached the saved project file but stuck a .pdf on it to be acceptable to the forum. It is not a .pdf file and the extension needs to be removed!I have one more thing to try and will report if it produces any usable results ....

    CCR10_coupon.pdf

  14. A bit of further info:

The default layer height on a new Ultimaker Original is 0.1 and the resulting g-code is fine'

Leave everything the same but change layer height to 0.2 and the offset is inserted at layer 1 !!! ????

Honestly, I am not making this up !!!!  Talk about weird crap !

Going back to my original CR10 printer, at a layer height of 0.2 the z height adjustment is inserted at Layer 1, at a layer height of 0.15 the z adjustment is at layer 0 as it is supposed to be.
