Do you mean the X or Z axis?

UM1 or 2?

If you're talking about the Z axis on a UM1, it probably depends on various things...

Sometimes, the z-leadscrew would bend a bit when moving the platform up and down. This makes the whole construction tense - it will require some more force to move the leadscrew. I don't have a clue, how much.

Personally, I wouldn't decrease the motor's power, but instead increase it as much as possible. This way you won't get any skipped steps. If you choose a motor which is just a little bit too weak, you might skip just a very few steps here and there and hardly notice, but you'll get errors in your prints..

The UP! uses small motors like that. The UP! is a smaller printer, but it seems to work for them. No idea what the torque is on them.

On the UM the motors are a bit "oversized" to prevent problems. You could most certainly get away with less, but would it be smart to do so for the tiny bit of extra cost you save?
