  1. The Ultimaker should get a heated bed upgrade option, we've seen the prototypes in the Ultimaker HQ. There might be a fab-lab near in in Eindhoven that has an Ultimaker.

The heated bed option is being prototyped, but the problem was the heating itself and the time it took to get the correct heat. You wont need with with PLA.

Currently I got prints with 0.025mm layers using experimental software, but I think that if you use netfabb you can even get lower than that...

  2. If the details are < 0.25mm, then I would recommend something else. 0.4mm is normal print head size, and this is also the smallest dot you can print on the ultimaker. The Z-axis can be smaller, but generally it does never below 0.1mm...

  3. better to let them on eBay

Just to make sure that you understand why I think this should not be on eBay: Ultimaker is a registrered trademark. Their licence gives the right for people to make & adapt the machine, however it is not allowed to sell it under the Ultimaker name (and thats what they are doing). Ultimaker can sue eBay for selling counterfeit items ;)

I would classify this one as "fake/counterfeit items", how unfortunately it would seem. If they can produce cheap machines, then I would suggest they put their effort in building a new kind of ultimaker, instead of just claiming that they are selling official ultimakers.

EDIT: trademark I was talking about

  4. mr_seeker, That is a bit far off.

The stepper motors are 200 steps per rev. The drivers are 1/16th microstepping. which means each motor step is

divided into 16 smaller steps. Makerbots use 1/8th steppers. So Makerbot = 1600 steps per Rev while

the UM uses 3200 steps per rev. But you can replace the stepper drivers on a Makerbot with 1/16th

drivers. I have a cupcake that uses 1/16th drivers on it.

Sorry, was too busy with other stuff. Edited my post.

  5. While checking the stepper power I found that the heatsink of the z-axis driver was loose. It hung just on a tiny spot of thermal grease (glue).

The stepper driver will function fine without heatsink, its there to prevent any malfunctions when the fan shuts down.

  6. Its not a bug in the shipping calculator, but a problem with how they tend to ship. They ship with DHL, which give out quotes based on volume, not weight. Shipping with the regular postal service would be better, however as a frequent user of that option (I ship quite a few goods abroad) I have experienced that unless I send it with insurance (which cost minimally 25 euro just to send something that is bigger than 2 DVD-boxes), it will never arrive at the destination. If I want to send the Ultimaker with those guys, I would spend at least 65 euro. And dont forget that they wont drive to Ultimaker to pick up the package, but Ultimaker has to come to them.

so you are basically saying that UM has no viable shipping method for small parts?

They have shipping by air mail for small parts, but then you need to ask support. Their website only has DHL to prevent people from shipping their ultimakers by air mail.

  7. Beware of fakes. The ultimakers ship with green motherboards, not blue, and they ship from holland, not hongkong. Also, buying it from sources other than Ultimaker will likely void any warranties and support you get from the Ultimaker crew. If something gets broken then Ultimaker wont ship free replacement parts to you. Also, with buying from Ultimaker you also support innovation and give credit to the people that made the machines.

Also, note that this possibly could be rev 2, and not the latest revision that is sold by Ultimaker. They propably took the free files and sources their own parts together.

  9. I spend about 30% of my budget on quality safety glasses.

2nd that. I got hit by schrapnel on my safety glasses while using a lathe (while a guy standing next to me, not wearing any safety glasses glasses, asked me why I was always wearing army-approved shotgun resistant safety glasses), seen (and heard) about people losing eyes due to exploding fireworks, and many more ugly things. I am always using safety glasses when I am working with objects that can explode, provide free laser surgery or create flying objects. Better be safe than sorry. Try climbing stairs with one eye, or catching a ball... You cant.

  10. Working on improving the Mechanical build wiki, but it takes at least 4-8 hours to get one part of the wiki done. Currently the guy who is helping me is gone for the rest of the week and I dont have too much time to spend on the wiki.

Currently we finished part 1 (frame) and 7 (electronics, which was a horrible mess btw) but all the other parts are still a mess and many of the pictures are outdated. It would help us a lot if people would look over the build instructions and edit where necessary.

  11. yes but if they actually bothered to post updates on the website re deliveries and progress then they woudl have less emails and hence more time to actually do other support tasks and also have a happier customer base. Saying on the website 6 weeks and then given no info even now when it looks like it may extend past the 7-8 weeks mark is not helpful for either side.

The 6 week mark is when they dont have problems with their suppliers. Sometimes they have a bad batch that delays their shipping times, its something you cant predict. I heard on monday that they were expecting a shipment of components to arrive tuesday, but when I hear 7-8 weeks now then I know this batch got delayed or defective (again). They have someone working on scaling up the production (since they moved to a new building they are expanding production), but that is taking some time.

They are not shipping half orders, but full orders. With full orders I mean orders that are checked on quality, not on quantity. That takes time, and when they have to send something back because its a bad batch, that will delay the shipping of ultimakers.

  12. Had a talk with the guys at support & production today (since I will be there for the next coming months to assist in a research project).

Current waiting time is 6 weeks. They hope to get a batch out this week, hopefully your shipment will be included Falc.

Support is trying to keep up with the mails & phone calls of people asking about shipping dates, however they ask people to ask the community first before contacting them.

  13. *update* I managed to get the tube out of the alu block. But its not budging from the peek. Guess I'm gonna have to buy another. I found the peek in the ultimaker shop but its 14 euros with a 58 euro shipping cost, are there any alternatives to this? This is getting discouraging.

Best is to contact ultimaker and ask for a shipping quote, 58 euro shipping cost sounds a bit too much for me.

  14. Couple of warnings when using the arduino in combination with the ADK:

    • [*:3ly4qq9t]You cant use pin 7, 50, 51 and 52. Its used for communications.
[*:3ly4qq9t]When you get a call, expect the machine to stop functioning.
[*:3ly4qq9t]When your screensaver is active, the communication will stop.
[*:3ly4qq9t]The ADK has softreset, so expect the machine to reboot itself every time you connect/disconnect it.

Its just something to keep in the back of your mind ;)
