Slicing Algorithms

Hello,

I'm doing a research project at my university and I am interested in the slicing algorithms used by CuraEngine, specifically the algorithms used to correct imperfect manifold STL files. I have downloaded the source code but it is difficult to understand directly. I have searched online but couldn't find anything except a very light discussion on the GitHub page. If anyone could give me a link to a more in depth explanation or explain it here I would be very much obliged.

Cura does not fix the mesh topology on the 3D model. It actually does most of the fixing in the 2D slices.

So what the CuraEngine does, it slices the 3D model in 2D slices, which results in a lot of 2D lines on the 3D plane. With these lines it tries to make fully enclosed 2D polygons. The rest of the engine works on these 2D polygons.

Just to clarify, Daid: When checking the 4 "fix horrible" settings - does this only affect the algorithm *after* slicing to a 2d polygon? Does this algorithm ignore layers above and below the current layer?
