Klipper on Ultimaker 3?

Hello,

I only realized after buying my current Ultimaker 3 Extended that its marlin implementation is kinda lacking, for example no linear advance and some other smaller things. What i hoped to help was the Tinkergnome firmware but it doesn't work on the UM3.

I just realised, the board is a somewhat standard RAMPS type board with the classical ATmega 8bit chip and the firmware is based on Marlin so does anobody know if I could get klipper to work with it? Has perhaps anybody had any success with this?

I don't think it is impossible, but it will be a lot of work and you will loose some functionality (such as automatic filament detection, printcore detection, the Digital Factory). Other functionality you will likely have to reimplement from scratch (tool changing, nozzle offset calibration, material changing).

Is there a possibility to change the marlin firmware to have all the current upgrades that are included now that are like the ones in Klipper? I hear the newest version has linear advance and input compensation.

I don't think it is impossible, but it will still be quite a bit of work. You would have to distill all the Marlin settings and customizations from the source for the Marlin firmware used for the UM3, and port those over to the new marlin version.

You can find the source of the current UM3 Marlin here:

It would have to be flashed on the olminix board? Or is it still on the ramps portion? Just wondering if maybe if the linux portion could be transferred and adapted to another board like raspberry pi like klipper or how it connects to the printer to keep digital factory.

Marlin would live on the ramps portion, but you could probably use the olimex board to flash the ramps board.

The digital factory etc stuff lives on the Olimex board, so if you replace that, you loose that functionality.

Let me reiterate my original reply: there is no easy way to put Klipper on the UM3, unless someone puts a LOT of work in that.

Technically, a lot is possible, but this task would be lots of work.

You could take the existing UM3 and add new Marlin + Klipper features, one feature at a time.

This makes the project manageable. By cherry-picking each feature you always have a working printer which will slowly improve.

But, .... it will be a project for someone who wants to spend a lot of time and energy. Good when you see programming as fun and you want to have a learning experience. Share the project on GitHub and others might join you.
