Have been using Ultimaker Cura 5.4 for a while but now application does not open - any ideas why this has happened

If you could post your cura.log file that would really help. On Windows you'll find it in %APPDATA%\cura\5.4\ In Linux I can't remember off the top of my head but I can look it up easily enough. In macOS I have no idea.

 

But as for possible causes - software/driver updates are often to blame. It's also possible your installation has somehow gotten corrupted by a bad plugin or something. You can test that by renaming the "cura" folder in %APPDATA% to something else and seeing if Cura works. I emphasise rename because if it doesn't fix the problem you can delete the new configuration folder it generates and rename your old one back to "cura" (and if it does fix the problem, you can grab things like settings presets from there instead of having to make them again from scratch.
