ERROR - STOPPED, Temp Sensor (Ultimaker 2+ Extended) (But I replaced all sensors and the board??)

Hi there guys, I'm as my wit's end at this point. I have an Ultimaker 2+ Extended and recently printed in some cold conditions (40-50F). After many successful prints, the printer reported "ERROR - STOPPED, Temp Sensor" so I moved the printer to a warmer environment. The error message went away and it successfully printed two more 4-hour print jobs before stopping mid job and reporting "ERROR - STOPPED, Print Bed Sensor". So I assumed something was going wrong with the board. I ordered replacement parts from FBRC8. First I replaced the board, and it reports "ERROR - STOPPED, Temp Sensor", so I wanted to rule out the board failing. So I replaced the heat bed entirely and it was still reporting "ERROR - STOPPED, Temp Sensor", so I replaced the temp probe in the olsen block and after powering it back up it is STILL reporting "ERROR - STOPPED, Temp Sensor". Anyone have any ideas? I can't confirm the firmware version because with the replacement board, I can't exit the error screen on startup.

Searching through the forums and adding this information to the mix. I disconnected the new temp probe at the head and measured it with a meter. It came in at 109.9 Ohms. So that seems to be within specification.

 

Swapping the printhead temp probe and heat bed temp probe does not change the message. It just reads "ERROR - STOPPED, Temp Sensor"

Ok, I grabbed the "broken" temperature sensor and measured its resistance and it was at 110 ohms, at the connector. So it may have never been broke in the first place. So I have a huge question:

 

"On successful bootup, should the LED display matrix always show a splash screen before reporting an error?"

 

Because mine is not doing the splash animation, it just goes to "ERROR - STOPPED Temp Sensor". Is it possible that the display is just bricked?? How can I force a different error to confirm my suspicion? Is it even possible that the LED display can be stuck; and if so, is there a way to reset the LED display?

The display is effectively "dumb" so you cant really brick it.. Marlin controls it directly in the UltiMaker 2 Extended.

Sounds like you have a short somewhere or your mainboard is bad.

The first thing Marlin does booting is to check for temp sensors for the bed and printhead.. if it cant find those it never completes the initial boot cycle (which is where the splash screen comes from)

I want to believe the new replacement board isn't shorted right out of the box, so I measured across the solder points for each temperature sensor and neither rang in like a short. I spoke briefly with the fbrc8 team and they thought that connector might not be seated properly, but reseating them all still results in the same error. I'm a bit concerned after measuring both the original and replacement temperature sensors and they both measured out the proper resistance (so maybe the temp probe never failed?). Is there any chance that this particular error can occur under any other conditions? The only things I haven't replaced with brand new parts are the chassis (and its motor/belt assemblies), limit switches and the display board.

The machine should technically "boot" with only the screen and 2 sensors plugged in..
But the short could be between the board and the frame or damaged wire in your printhead cable etc.

Good idea! I disconnected the entire board from the chassis and completely pulled the temp sensor out of the printhead cable assembly. The board is now on an isolated rubber pad, connected only to the power supply cable, the print head temp sensor and the two cables going to the LED display. It still reports "ERROR - STOPPED Temp Sensor". 

 

The fact that this is a brand new board is wearing on me. I want to believe there is a chance that the board is defective, but the fact that it reported the same error when it was the first thing I replaced leads me to believe there is a problem elsewhere; but both of the temp sensors are measuring the correct resistance. I could get a 110ohm resistor and stick it on the leads if that will give me any more data.

I am about to begin the process of manually ringing out every solder connection on the board against the two pins going to TEMP1. I will let you guys know if I find a short. While I'm doing this, are we 100% certain this couldn't be an issue caused by the display board? Its the only other thing connected to the board and its the only part of the original system that is connected to the new board and sensors.

So I built the entire machine after ringing out the board and detecting no shorts. I believe that the board that I had as a spare has some form of defect that I can't trace. As part of my testing I reattached the old board while the new probe was attached and the problem went away. So I believe I technically induced a new problem with a new board and solved the old problem by simply replacing the temperature probe. A boring and disappointing outcome though I still have a functioning printer so there's that. To those who might want to buy a replacement board in the future, it's definitely not worth $400+. Should probably just buy new machine. I'm happy I bought my replacement board for in advance of it reaching that cost.
