Posted · Alternate Wall Directions does not apply User Specified Z Seam Alignment correctly

I need to print a hollow double-walled volume from flexible filament, where the 2 flanges need to connect seamlessly higher up in the print. However, because of the consistent travel direction of the hotend, and using flexible filament, the edges of the flanges are being pushed out of position. And I also need the seam to be in a specific position.

Selecting Alternate Wall Directions would potentially solve that problem, as the stresses on the flange are equalized. But that option seems to lose the seam position on the alternating layers. Is this something that can be fixed in future Cura versions?

Using Cura 5.7.1.

You can submit a feature request if you'd like.

I spent a few minutes playing around with the settings but the best I was able to do was this which I'm pretty sure isn't what you want 😞

Cura has a hard time picking a seam location for something like this because it prefers to put them in corners, and you don't have any.

Also I'm sorry but every time I look at a picture of this model I can't help but think it's a shoe. Maybe I should stock up on TPU and print myself some Crocs. I'm pretty sure they don't come in my size (most shoes don't come in my size).

Hi Slashee, and thanks for the reply!

You are totally right in seeing a shoe in there. I can probably make you a shoe in your size. Look up FUSED footwear (and hit me up for a discount if you want).

But I wouldn't just pass out my cad files, so the 3D model I shared is an approximation.

How did you get the seam to be aligned like that? I can probably/maybe just rotate the shoe to a position where the seam is where I want it be. So it would be super helpful to know how!

Just changed Z Seam Position to Right and Seam Corner Preference to None. So yeah, definitely worth testing just either rotating the shoe (or manually entering different Z seam coordinates).

I was getting all ready to joke about how you couldn't make one in my size. Then I looked up the build volume of your printer. You could probably pull that off. There's a whole lot of printers that wouldn't.
