Calibration procedure with Cura e.g

Hello together,

I am searching about an hour for a clear answer to my question, but I think everyone has

a different method. But I am new and I want to do it pretty right :) .

The theme is the calibration of my Utimaker with e.g. the Cura procedure. What I don´t understand

is, must I do the extrusion of e.g. 100mm filament through the hot end, or should the filament

walk free in the bowden tube. I think (and read it) theres a difference between the both methods.

And then, when I got the right lenght, what must I do, to get the right E-steps number. Is there a formula?

Sorry for my newbie stupidness.

First of all, the Cura first run wizard could guide you a bit better. With some photos, and better guidance. Sorry about that.

It assumes you do a cold extrusion, but I haven't found a difference between cold and hot extrusion. But some people say there is. (putting 100mm of filament trough the hotend would create quite a mess, and wouldn't work at the speed it is using for the calibration)

On how to do it, I did it like this:

If you enter the extruded length into Cura, then it will update the "steps per E" for you. No need to use formulas. (which would be silly, why let the user calculate something if you have a big calculating machine in front of you)

running Cura 12.08, I calibrated the feed distance as 108mm, which gave e steps/mm as 809.2

I set this number in Cura and generated the 'fine' option.

I checked the Gcode file and it still had as the first actionable line: M92 865.888

so I edited it to M92 E809.2 and started the printer

both windows listed input parameters

the line: Echo external reset

was followed with Echo steps oer unit

Echo M92 X Y Z E865.89

all of this was checked after I trustingly ran the printer, which printed PLA (pure, light air) after 20mm of a 30mm print job.

So where do I set this parameter and know that it stays set?
