The belt has almost an inch or so of play in it and looks perilously close to skipping on the teeth. The top section is about as tight as the other belts are. Following a nice chat with HAC, I've actually now rejected the printer and as agreed with them, it's being returned to be swapped out with another Ultimaker2. As, I discovered that when the printer sits on a flat surface it will rock on two legs so something somewhere isn't good! The shipping box has signs of impact damage on one corner (which I didn't spot) so it would appear it may have become damaged in transit. Shame, these things happen I guess, but I reckon in the meantime I'll just spend more time getting to grips with OpenSCAD, as I have several more projects in mind now!

Hi, My first print: Quick question, what is causing the holes or bubbles? (The print is with PLA on all the default settings of the Ultimaker2) I've noticed that the underside of the front belt is very loose and there doesn't appear to be any means to tighten it. Has anyone any ideas on the holes and also the belt ? :???:

This is a very useful thread. I'm very new to 3D printing and have been looking at which CAD packages I can best get on with and "relate to" I'm tending to gravitate towards OpenSCAD at the moment, only as it somehow makes sense to me and I'm finding it fairly straightforward to generate results quickly. My applications are more of an engineering bent than artwork so I completely agree with DonMilne. I do a fair bit of embedded microprocessor projects so I guess I quite like OpenSCADs "C" type feel. To an extent the design becomes self documenting if you liberally make use of the comment fields which is another feature I quite like about it. Especially good when you come back to a particular design after a few months wondering how to change a particular part of it. CAD software is interesting - as I think, there doesn't appear to be any defined "standard" to it. Each manufacturer has their very own particular take on how the interface should be for the user, a little like pcb design packages and the choice is really quite large. So I think try them all, at least those which have free demos, and settle with whichever package you feel you can best relate with.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'd wondered if any of the holes might need any supporting, but it seems they won't which is great! Do you know if there's 'a rule of thumb' for when something might need supporting, or is it a case of just trying it out? (edit - just spotted your advice about meshmixer - downloading that now)

Blimey! Those are impressive, was that second print done in that orientation ? if so, wow! If I've done this right then hopefully there might be an image attached here.... (edit: I'm getting "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community") the image is a .jpg (it's a small screen grab) I'll see if I can locate that recent post about adding images... :smile:

Hi all, I've just today purchased a Ultimaker2 and I already have a print I'd like to do with it. It's a bracket I've designed in OpenSCAD What I'm wondering is, what might be the best orientation of it for printing, as there are some holes which run through parts of it. But first.... can any kind person please advise me how I upload a screenshot of it? :grin:Thanks in advance!

Well, after a very long time looking at all the various 3D printers out there, I finally took the plunge and bought the Ultimaker 2 today :mrgreen: I'll be picking it up tomorrow and can't wait to get printing. So, Hello all!
