  1. BTW: what is the reason for the reduced length (8 mm), did you had issues with the default retraction (16 mm)?

It was a problem on my end, I set it back to 16mm.

My tests using PETG as a support for PLA are a bit underwhelming.

I do obtain crazy good surface on the PLA when peeling off, but often struggle with PLA adhesion on PETG.

The adhesion is a bit too weak, it's sad because for some parts it works really well.

The second issue is about the oozing, I can't make it stop, if I lower the temp on extruder 2 (PETG) to 220, I get troubles extruding properly, especially when printing small support structures. I did not see the effect of bigger or faster toolretracts.

  2. I could be wrong about all this but definitely it doesn't make sense to me to retract more than the standard 4.5mm unless your bowden is loose.

George, that's true for normal retractions. But Melka asked for the toolchange retract of the inactive nozzle (in Cura it's called "Nozzle Switch Retraction") - that's a different thing...

The default for the Mark2 is 16 mm at 20 mm/s (the same as the "end-of-print" retraction - more or less).

Looks like this setting is hidden in Cura for the Mark2 profile.

Do you know how we could activate it ?

  3. I checked the pulleys and they were all really tight.

Could you guys try to replicate the problem we see by printing this cura project ?

You don't have to put materials in the second printhead and you can even put it out of the printer. Just be sure that you tape it so it doesn't burn shit.

Should take around 1h45min to print.

If you can replicate the problem, then we know it's something widespread.

  4. The print is actually leaning to the left and the back of the printer.

    I used a .2 layer height.

    My print was ~97.2mm tall

    Offset to the left: 3.5mm

3.5/97.2 = 0.036 mm of deviation, per mm

    0.036 * .2 = 0.0072 mm of deviation, per layer

    Offset to the back: 3.5mm

exact same results as for the left.

So, it seems that we are shifting by the same amount towards the left and the back.

  5. This is a copy/paste of the conversation going on in the beta-tester forum of the Mark2.

We are moving the discussion here

    ----

Houston, I think we have a problem

I made a very simple model to test the "leaning to the left" behavior.

    Test 1:

    Single extrusion

    IMG_20170602_194322.thumb.jpg.7a9fcb0d4f106c5f4f5fec2af7e01a61.jpg

Good print, it stays perfectly aligned.

    Test 2:

    Dual extrusion

    IMG_20170602_114009.thumb.jpg.47ec87af8f12dc1bac6e19cf9bbb1e24.jpg

    It's fucked.

Here, we can see that somewhere in the first quarter of the print, it failed to pick the second print extruder.

I simply put the second print head away from the printer, so there was no interaction between magnets : it doesn't change anything. Magnets are not responsible for what we observe

Comparison between test 1 (left) and test 2.

Something is wrong, do you guys have ideas ?

Could you please try to replicate this problem ?

Here is the project file, Cura 2.6: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgmRtaUlyi-AkZhYSI2hRGizd3o3Cw

  6. It's still a good idea to start with a manual level and make sure the glass is also physically leveled pretty good to begin with, so there's less need for compensation.

Yes ! My colleague had a problem with warping on the UM3... we had to run the manual leveling first otherwise the automatic leveling wasn't able to correct properly.

Imo, I'd rather not rely on the automatic leveling. The only usage I see with this system, is to correct when the glass is not perfectly flat or if you have several glass that you like to swap for faster production.

  7. I've used Colorfabb with success in the past

I really hate Colorfabb's PLA/PHA (but the natural color is great) as I found it very squishy, almost like printing toothpaste.

I know only crave for filaments with Ingeo resin with little additives and colorants (Polymaker Polyplus PLA is nice)

  8. You may want to read your initial post again and apologize for the tone.

I don't feel there is much hate/rage/disrespect in his post:

    New user here. Questions:

    - Why does a $3500 device feature a cheap UVC camera with resolution so low you can barely read the Ultimaker logo?

    - Why not use some lightweight embedded Linux distribution (Alpine?) instead of bloated Debian with systemd that eats all free space and stresses mtd with constant writes.

    - Where is a github repository for Ultimaker 3?

You shouldn't feel offended as his questions were pretty relevant and asked correctly. You guys made very thorough answers and I'm sure the community is grateful for that.

We are supposedly all adults here and I think we can handle some spiced up discussion.

  9. My own Ultimaker original would often quit printing over USB when I turned on a 12V halogen lamp on my desk.

Hey, do you have a solution for this ?

My Ultimaker 2+ stopped two times. First was with a lamp as well, second while I plugged in my Prusa i3 MK2 (I felt the rivalry here)

  10. - Why does a $3500 device feature a cheap UVC camera with resolution so low you can barely read the Ultimaker logo?

It was said that manufacturing a higher-end camera specifically for the UM3 was either cost-prohibitive or would have delayed the release.

    - Why not use some lightweight embedded Linux distribution (Alpine?) instead of bloated Debian with systemd that eats all free space and stresses mtd with constant writes.

Good call, maybe they had some ideas behind that ?

    - Where is a github repository for Ultimaker 3?

    Nowhere.

And we are approaching the usual 6 months wait time between release of the printer and the availability of source files.

I still find that waiting 6 months before publishing source files while claiming to be open-source is not very fair play.
