I ended up just running with the sides - no top. Found this a good compromise. Running with the top on made it get too warm. You could see the guide rails getting heat coloring from continual movement.
I was thinking of insulating around + underneath the heated bed. Surely it must loose a lot of heat from underneath. (Waste)

neat idea, thanks of posting. I might try this this winter, I usually have more issues during the cold months.
