Cura 2.5

Yesterday I downloaded Cura 2.5. and thought I had a cure to a problem I have - that literally thousands of Anet A8 printers - have never come across!

If I use Repetier and the USB connection to the printer... the extruder lifts and remains about 20mm above the hotbed and starts "printing". I have a second A8 and that uses the USB and is OK.

So assuming the cause was firmware I passed it to Anet - who seem clueless...and just use the SD card.

However, when I loaded a .stl into Cura 2.5 and used the resulting g-code in the normal " Cura 2.4." way,

Now this one does the same - extruder lifts moves to the print start point - and about 20mm up - starts "air" printing.

I scrap the g-code, open 2.4. reprocess .stl - load g-code into Repetier - it prints "normal! without issues.

So, had I not had the - more or less - same issue on the other machine - its looking like the Anet firmware and something in 2.4 affects it. The firmware is different - it as the auto level included in the firmware- the other machines uses the "Omni" firmware - no auto level capability - without uploading an upgrade.

I will not summarize - its all above and I am hoping people a lot smarter than me can see a solution...

I really want to like Cura, but has been nothing but a pain in the ass. I print with Repetier, and decide to try Cura again, and I have the same issue you are, but there doesn't seem to be any support. No answers. As a brand new Noob, having to edit a .py file to get usb to work seems a bit beyond the pale.

The authors of Cura made it very adaptable to other printers but stopped there. It's up to people like yourselves to create plugins or guides to make it effortlessly slice for other printers. Someone will eventually create add-ons for most major printers. Or you could talk to the company that made your particular printer and have them adapt cura for your printer. And tell them to then do a git pull request and the authors of cura will take care of that so those features will be in the next release.
