I found the standard support to work with PLA and I mostly used weak fluff and fluff back when I printed PLA.
I had to customize the settings for ABS. Here's an example, if you can copy and paste the following into a .reprapstyle file, you should be able to try it (for ABS). I wish I could figure out a way to simply attach the file here. :(

In NetFabb I believe the best (and really the only reliable option) is weak fluff support. This builds a bunch of branching towers from the bed up towards the overhands and then at the top few layers before the overhang it deliberately under-extrudes so that the actual support is 'fluffy' and easy to remove...
I rarely ever use support though... Best by far to avoid support as much as you can by careful placement / orientation of the model or splitting it up and gluing together.
