Some people have found that if they remove the arduino from their PCB it can upgrade whereas when mounted on the PCB it won't upgrade. This makes no sense to me but whatever.
I recommend you buy a new arduino. They are cheap. What country are you in? Here in the USA you can get one for $20 on ebay which includes shipping costs. I believe you want the mega 2560.
