Firmware upgrade without USB?

I've not been able to connect my Ultimaker original via USB for some time. I've read many threads about this issue and tried all suggestions but it won't connect to a range of machines from XP to windows 8.

For printing no problem but as time moves on I'm updating cura but don't seem to have a means of updating the firmware, can this be done via the SD card? or is there some other way of doing this?

Some people have found that if they remove the arduino from their PCB it can upgrade whereas when mounted on the PCB it won't upgrade. This makes no sense to me but whatever.

I recommend you buy a new arduino. They are cheap. What country are you in? Here in the USA you can get one for $20 on ebay which includes shipping costs. I believe you want the mega 2560.

I had to remove the arduino too, only the first time, after that no problems anymore with connecting and upgrading.
