Fan Speed

I am new to 3D printing.  I recently purchased a 3D printer. Have been trying it out on some different models from Thingiverse, Printables. etc.  I have noticed that when printing it cranks the fans up pretty high.  It is quite noisy, I was wondering if the gcode generally has a "required" fan speed coded in, or would I be safe to lower the speed to cut down on the noise.

Tuning a 3D printer for "noise" levels is usually never a viable option as it comes at a significant cost of print quality and reliability.

Additionally not all 3d printer models support adjusting the fans that might be causing the noise.
It would be best to reach out to the user community around whatever model 3d printer you have for the best advice.

It is also worth noting that most printers will have at least two fans built in, one is used for cooling the hot end (which yes I realise sounds like a contradiction) and cannot be changed by software as it is controlled by the printer's firmware. The other fan/s are used for cooling parts and while they can be lowered, it will usually result in a lower quality result. Loud print > bad print.

As @Dustin said, you could reach out to the community for your printer, I know that some people have printed baffles to redirect the noise from their printers' fans, however depending on the design this may not be possible.

If your printer does not have a closed build volume, you could also purchase a "tent" designed to put a 3D printer in. These are often more used for environmental stability (keeping the temperature as consistent as possible to aid in printing materials prone to warping like ABS), however mine is more there just to keep the printer clean (this place is dusty). It doesn't stop the noise but it does muffle it a bit.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
