Quality trouble on a white pla filament

Posted · Quality trouble on a white pla filament

Hello,

I recently bought new white PLA from Mexhibit (Swiss supplier). The filament looks good, it's printing fine, etc... etc.... but !

The surface quality of my print are not smooth. And I don't know what is the probleme and if I can improve that.

As you can see on the pictures bellow, there is a huge difference between this Mexhibit filament and my old Fabberdashery filament. Do you know how can I fix that ?

After measured the diameter of the Mexhibit filament, I saw that it is bigger. So I tried to change the diameter in Cura from 2.89 to 2.95. The blobs were disapear, but I still have the non smooth surface.

(Printing temp at 210°C - 220°C for the both models)

I think the irregularities are the result of pressure fluctuations in the hotend. This can have many origins.

It could be the additional resistance in the Bowden tube due to the larger diameter. It could be imhomogeneities in the filament itself (e.g. not completely homogeneous admixture of the color master batch). Or larger fluctuations of the filament diameter.

Sometimes such fluctuations can be levelled out by increasing the print temperature.

One question: Were the two models sliced with the same version of Cura?

If it's inhomogeneities in the filament then you probably can't. This is why I decided to stop buying noname filament and just go for quality filament about which I read positive things here in the forum. Even then not every filament might work out for everybody.

Do you have some Faberdashery left with which you could run a test print to cross-check it's still getting you reasonable print quality?

Yes I've some Faberdashery PLA. But I hadn't any trouble with it. Fabberdashery is really the best PLA I've used. I bought this PLA from Mexhibit (Zurich supplier). I'll never buy any PLA at this supplier. At each order I had poor filament quality or conditioning trouble (Seal bag opened for PVA...).
