Can you specify a number of "shells"?

Posted · Can you specify a number of "shells"?

When ever I see some recommendations for printing, it says something like this "0.22mm layers, 3 shells and 35% infill"

I assume they arn't using CURA.. But whilst I know what the Layer and Infill is.. What about "shells"?

Does CURA have the concept of "shells"? If so, can it be configured?? Or is this simply the same as the "Shell Thickness"? If so, whats the relationship between the shell thickness in mm, and the "number" of shells?

    Shell thinkness in combination with the nozzle size controls the shell count.

    If something says 3 shells, they most likely mean 1.5mm shell thickness, as default nozzle sizes on most machines are 0.5 and not 0.4 as on the UM.

    Just found an interesting page talking about shells, infill and layers and it seems that the "shell" is the amount of times a shell is laid.

    So does this mean that if you have a 0.4mm nozzle, then a single shell is 0.4mm.. So by definition, 1.2mm shell, would be the same as 3 shells?

    Yes, but, if the design calls for 3 shells. Then what was the real intention? Printer nozzles go from 0.25 to 0.8mm. So depending on the nozzle, you could end up with a very strong or a weak part if you go by shell count.

    Understood.. I MUCH prefer the way that CURA does it, but I just watned to check incase I missed something.
