Cura cannot cope with big file?

I wish to print a model of the calcaneum (heel bone). I have converted a CT scan and the STL is 80Mb in size. As the calcaneum is a solid bone, I assume that the slicing takes some time. I did get to the point of having the gcode with a 30 hour print once. I want to make some changes to speed up the print - such as scale down the model and increase the print speed but now Cura simply gets stuck when building the gcode.

Is this a known problem with Cura that it cannot cope with big files

Which Cura version do you use? There has been an issue with big data files in the past but this was addressed in V14.09.

A good trick is to move the object to the side so it doesn't fit to the print area, change the settings and then put it back. Like that it's less likely that Cura hangs up itself.

do you need all the polygons? Or would a decimated mesh work, generated by Zbrush for example.

Usually you can reduce polygon count by about 80% without having a noticeable difference in quality of the model.

The model does load. The progress bar starts but rarely finishes.

Could be (another) memory related issue. What happens if you double the layer thickness? (just for testing reasons)

I reduced the size of the model to x,y, and z each 0.5 of the original size. I assume that reduces the memory. Still an incomplete print.
