Look at the shaft that drives the filament up into the tube, it is knurled so that it can grip the filament. I assume that's what you're seeing. (and yes, it's normal)
Yes, it is knurled. Figured it didn't matter since my prints were coming out fine.
Thanks Robert! Btw, those two guides you made have been immensely helpful for this newbie. I owe you a few beers!

I'm not having any issues printing, but I noticed that the filament ends up with teeth marks when it goes through the feeder. It's not grinding it or anything but it definitely has a continuous series of marks. Just wondering if this is normal?
I searched the forums but didn't find any information about it.

I haven't had my printer very long, but I've used Black and Blue-Grey from ColorFabb without any issues.

First of all gcode files open just fine in notepad. Just drag and drop onto a fresh notepad.
Secondly - that stuff above isn't a .gcode file. It's a .ini file. Do "file" "save profile" and it will create an ini file which is *also* a text file that is human readable with notepad.
Gotcha, thanks for the info.

Good to know, thanks Nightwish!

Print slower and cooler. This is a difficult print. For maximum beauty I would print at 25mm/sec and 200C. Make sure travel speed is at least 200mm/sec to avoid plastic leaking out while spanning those gaps.
Do you just change the temp in the tune section on the printer, or do I do that through Cura?
-
Yeah I saw that, but it only seemed to move material down. Good to know about the extruder motor though.

I am very new to 3d printing. Do you know what they mean by 2 outlines? Are they talking about Shell Thickness in Cura?
-
Thanks yellowshark, I'll give that a try.
Cheers!

I'm a total newbie here, but how do you get the gcode above as the files don't seem to open in Notepad?

Just wanted to get some suggestions on how I can print this for a better finish.
I did a layer height of 0.1mm, Zero infil, shell thickness of 1mm and a print speed of 60mm/s.
Here are some pics of it.

I live in Canada and didn't want to go through Ultimaker for my Ultimaker 2 as I was itching to get one as soon as possible. I went through Dynamism in the US and had a great experience with them. They were quick to answer questions and I had my printer 2 days after they shipped it.
Definitely would recommend them. It's too bad they don't carry spare parts for it though.

Thanks DonMilne, I was wondering if you could just print more of those so I'll grab that design from you and get a few more made.
Cheers!

Problem Solved!
Turns out it was that little piece of plastic blocking the PTFE tube, so after taking apart the head for the first time I was able to fish it out, get it all back together, and I'm now printing a test piece in red. Success! I also found the blue collet as well, it had fallen inside the head.
Thanks for all the help everyone, much appreciated! I'll definitely be cutting the filament ends as you suggested for easier loading.

Ok I took out the Bowden tube (somehow lost the little blue collar in the process, absolutely no idea where it went  ) and it looks like there is some material blocking the opening. Any suggestions how to get that out? Do I need to take apart the print head?
-
Thanks for the advice guys. How to do you move the filament up, not sure where that setting is? And I cut a wedge on the end but it didn't go in, and this time it's the blue filament I was able to use last night.
And both the red and blue are from Ultimaker.
Edit: Ok I don't think it's the filament as it's now doing it with all three. I did try cutting a wedge shape in them, still no joy.

I just got my Ultimaker 2 a few days ago and have been able to print out a whole slew of things. But this happened a couple of days ago and is happening tonight, coincidentally with the same roll of red PLA. It basically loads the new red material, gets to the extruder, then the feeder at the back starts making clicking noises like it's trying to feed the filament but it can't for some reason. If I try and heat up the nozzle then manually move material in the advanced options, it makes the same clicking noise.
Any ideas why this is happening? Keep in mind this is from a roll of red that came with my printer. Thanks!
Edit: I changed to the blue and didn't have any issues, it began printing a test piece and layed down the first layers no problem.
The weird thing is I have printed a couple of small objects with the Red previously. Maybe it's just a bad batch.

For someone who just got their first printer last week, this is a godsend. Thank you so much Robert!

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of voxel and the colorfabb filament working well in the Ultimaker 2, but I was wondering if that cheap ABS would work, so I appreciate your advice.

I recently bought a UM2 and wanted to stock up on some filament and was wondering if ColorFabb is a good choice of filament supplier?
I live in Canada, so if anyone has any recommendations for filament suppliers in general or which brands to use, I would greatly appreciate some advice. I can get the Colorfabb from a local supplier, but they only carry the PLA/PHA filament so I'm also looking for one for ABS.
Thanks in advance!

Does anyone have any recommendations on filament suppliers for the Ultimaker 2 in Canada? I just bought one and want to fill up on filament and obviously avoid any issues.
How many Ultimaker 2s in Canada?

Just curious to see how many fellow Canadians we have on here with a UM2.
