Cost effective how? There are plenty of capable cheap machines out there that you can buy and use happily. Some might require a bit more tinkering than others to get going the way you want but in essence they all perform the same task. This page might be helpful in finding something that fits your budget and needs:

But if you feel that you'll eventually go with an Ultimaker regardless, then you're just wasting money buying something else first IMHO.

And of course, no matter which brand of printer you buy, or how much you pay, expect to have to do some troubleshooting. There does not exist a 3d printer today that is completely maintenance and head ache free to my knowledge.

If you are into designing your own stuff you can save tons of money by doing the design work yourself and then order your parts through 3dhubs.

then if you find yourself planning to spend more than the cost of a printer in parts you can finally buy one.

This is also a good way to test out quality from various printers before you buy one and even go visit local people who own the printer you are thinking of buying. Most people on 3dhubs are happy to have you come pick up the part and chat a bit.
