Why does the UM2+ do this on every print? Is this normal?

Yes, it's intended, it's priming, to make sure the nozzle is nicely filled with plastic at the start of the actual print.

Also very useful to check if you have good flow. When you see the plastic coming out all curly you need to clean your nozzle (google 'atomic pull').
