Cura creating blobs... possibly due to retraction settings

Posted · Cura creating blobs... possibly due to retraction settings

Hi everyone. I'm having some issue with Cura creating blobs sometimes.

Below is an image showing one print done in Cura and another done in Simplify3D with identical settings.

The problem isn't the retraction distance or speed because they are set identically. I believe the problem is how Cura does it's retraction compared to S3D. It seems as though S3D does the retraction while moving from one point to another, minimizing the oozing, whereas Cura pauses, retracts, moves and then extrudes again, which causes a bunch of oozing and resulting in blobs.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any work arounds?

Afaik cura 2.4 can retract+wipe for um3 profiles, but I doubt it will do it for um2 since ultiflavor doesn't allow that to happen since the retraction distance is a separated gcode of um2 that works according the machine material profile selected. Probably making a custom profile and using reprap flavor could allow to do that on cura. Maybe @nallath can put more light on the new 2.4 options, I don't use it but probably there's something to do that now.

Cura can certainly produce a result comparable to the piece on the rhs. Well 15.n could and I am sure 2.4 can, probably more so. A picture is great but it would help to know what your settings were, primary settings and detail retraction settings, to help debug the problem

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
