Posted (edited) · How to use Cura for Makerbot Replicator 2x (firmware 7.6)

Hi Guys,

I've been introduced to Cura recently and I was told it has some really cool feature like no other slicer. I've been using Simplify3D for quite a while and I can easily use it with my replicator 2x and z18. I have done some readings on the forum and obviously Cura doesn't support Z18 as its a Gen 5 printer, so that's out of the picture, but how about the Replicator 2x? the printer doesn't respond to the generated x3g or Gcode file produced by Cura!  here is my user defined machine setting for replicator 2x and I learned , Cura doesn't work with dual extrusion either, which is fine, 99% of the time I only use one extruder anyways.

Please let me know if my settings has some flaws that cause the issue.

P.S. the start and end Gcode scripts are copied and pasted from Simplify3D and I am wondering of that might be the cause.

I’ve been working on a proper profile for the Replicator 2 and the 2X. There’s a little bug in the X3G output plugin that needs to be resolved but otherwise it seems to be working reasonably well. This is with single extrusion printing — dual extrusion is definitely possible but will require additional bugs to be fixed.

Makerbot recently released file format specifications for their 5th gen toolpath format so it should be possible for someone to write an output plugin for it. Definitely not a high priority for me though.

i have not yet set up Cura yet, as I just downloaded it today,  But You should be able to use the Gcode files generated by using the Octoprint application.   Octoprint will require some setup work and requires that you configure a raspberry pie to help control your printer through the USB printer cable. I have been using Octoprint for about 4 months now and it is amazing and is constantly updated with new features.  it has turned my makerbot 2x into an amazing high Quality machine.  I am currently generating Gcode using the makerbot desktop slicer (save as), ahd have had no problems with dozens of prints.

I will update this post once I get set up with Cura and let you know what I find.
