If you get a UM3 and have tried it out with 2.85mm filament and are ready to convert, contact me.  You might be able to get a free conversion from 3dsolex but contact me first and let me talk to Carl at 3dsolex.  I think Carl would be happy to sell these "conversion cores" but he needs some people to experiment with it first before he can make it an official product.

I actually have a customer in USA who wants to convert to 1.75 so I should know much more in a few weeks.  For example how good the "plus" feeder (found on UM2+ and UM3) will work with 1.75mm.  It should be fine but I haven't tried it myself.

Regarding "conversion core" - that's what I was thinking about.

It may works to feed 1,75mm through a 2,85mm but I can imagine trouble ahead where cold & hot end meet...

Anyway,  guess if I take the UM3e, I will start with 2,85mm filament just to eliminate trouble;-)

There are more things to take into account. In the '2.85' bowden tube (the inner diameter is actually 3.16mm) you almost completely undermine your retraction settings if you feed 1.75mm through it and lose almost all control over your filament. The feeder also is dialed in for 2.85mm filament, not sure how it would respond to 1.75mm filament. Then, at the end of the line, there is also the print core.

Anyway, I would definitely stress to start off with regular 2.85mm filament, how it is intended to be used. After a while, when you are familiar with the Ultimaker 3Extended, ask yourself if you got used to 2.85mm filament and just continue to use it or that you still want to convert. Perhaps the need will be gone then and you'll use it as intended. If not, there is a lot of help here to help you out :)

    Hi Sander,

yes, certainly I will start with 2,85mm.

Only if it would be something easy (and cheap) to do I would consider using a 1,75mm conversion -

just to get rid of all that filament I still have around here;-)

For sure I could do that, Brulti.

Maybe I'll try to - but it would be quite a loss, anyway.

    Still comparing options.

There are a lot of 3D-Printers around.

But it looks like none of them is without drawbacks.

So I try to find the "least worse compromise";-)

And to be honest - at the very moment I am strongly considering buying a bunch of parts and building my own printer.

Which would give me one big advantage - I know who's to blame when it does not work...

While I must admit that the Ultimaker 3 does look promising.

    Oh, options, oh options ....

So just to end this thread - and assure all of you there are more to come from me...;-)

Got an offer today which was quite appealing so I thought to myself - let's give it a try.

Now I look forward for "yellow santa" to ring at my door tomorrow -

delivering an UM3e and some stuff to get me started with it;-)

Again, thank you all for your answers & thoughts!

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
