In fact I recommend tinker firmware which has lots of amazing features including "continue failed print" and other features even more valuable.

The reason I was trying to run the update in the first place, is because the extruder remains on top of the print after it's done, with the nozzle and bed temperature running causing fillament to ooze over the print.

That's why. It's confusing. I know.
So I think it is working just fine. Not every new version of cura comes with a firmware update.
So then Cura 3.6 won't have a firmware update above 3.3.0?
Edited by EddieCueProbably not. Ultimaker is spending more time I suspect on the newer products and not the UM2 series. The bug you speak of sounds familiar but I forget what it is. The bug is probably fixed in tinkerMarlin. @tinkergnome - do you remember this marlin bug? Is this the one that is fixed by doing one of 3 things and one of the things is to add more comments at the bottom of the gcode file? If so, wasn't that fixed well before cura 3.3.0?
I'm not sure, but there was another bug with the end-of-print retraction that was fixed after the 3.3 release (only on GitHub).
The most recent activity was 5 month ago, and there is a beta release of the UM2+ firmware from Oct. 2018

the commit contains some release notes for it:
