Ultimaker 3 stuck at "remove print" after firmware update (4.3.96 stepping stone) - printer bricked!

I updated my Ultimaker 3 to firmware 4.3.96.20190313, and successfully printed a model. At the end of the print, the screen is stuck at "print removed". When I press the button, it beeps, but remains on that screen. That means I can't access the menus or do anything else with the printer. I tried rebooting, but it returns to the same "print removed" screen. That means my printer is effectively bricked... I can't do anything with it. Is there some way to perform a factory reset without being able to use the menus?

    Maybe try cura connect?

FYI - version 4.3.96 is a "stepping stone" version intended to never be used to print but intended to let you upgrade to version 5.2.  So if you manage to unbrick it you still need to do one more upgrade.

You can always go back to an older version using this messy method:

@ctbeke - is there a way through ssh to turn off this flag?  Would that let him then upgrade to 5.2?

Oh wait - if he's not in developer mode he can't use ssh and he can't get to developer mode because he's stuck on an infinite popup.

I think he's going to have to use the unbricking procedure above.

A reseller just told me that when they get this infinite loop issue the only recourse they know of is to use the unbricking procedure I linked to above.

Thanks @gr5. I flashed the recovery.img and booted from it. After a while, the dial went green and the LCD said to power down and remove the SD card. After doing that, rebooting normally, and going through the initial setup, the printer was running firmware 4.3.3.20180529. I was then able to upgrade to 4.3.96.20190313, then 5.2.8.20190320. I haven't run a print job yet, but the menus and network connection seem to be working.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
