Yes, it can work, but chances are high that the filament gets stuck somewhere in the Bowden tube.

some dealers are selling as 2.85 mm (3 mm)  .... confusing!  Are they just rounding up or is it 3 mm being sold as 2.85 mm?

You are right, nowadays most (I guess) 3mm filament is actually 2.85, but you should ask the dealer and measure it before to be on the safe side.
