Good point
-
Well I am used to going step by step since that's what the directions are all about !
For example, up to know, each section prefaced with the parts needed and how to proceed.
When I got to the bed, I got a picture of the parts but no part listing of what will be needed
So the Wiki is inconsistent
I suppose if this is your second or third build, its quite easy. But for a wary new comer, whose read numerous issues about alignment issues on other threads, I would very much like to get it assembled correctly the first time.
-
Ha, funny you say that, just finished the bed...!
-
We've skipped ahead hoping for better pictures of the completed items but haven't
Based on some of the alignment issues others have had, I am trying to avoid re-doing things.
(And kinda wishing i went with assembled...I'd rather be printing versus decoding the wiki/building)
-
Just looking for some good pictures of how everything should look, especially the pulleys and linkages...I have some questions about how sliders face, etc
Thanks!
-
Question on the tray...the left side...I haven't tightened it all the way...but it doesn't go flush...does this look right?
-
Is there better pictures to show how to get the axis and pulleys installed? The pictures in the wiki show no detail (front, left, right?) and we are somewhat stuck trying to figure out how to proceed
Its as if whoever wrote the instructions just gave up on this section. We had really good writing up until this point.
Questions we have...
We know we have four AXIS
What is extremely vague is the order of pictures that show, well, nothing pertinent.
We are looking to see what sides get pulleys and which do not.
Please go here http://wiki.ultimaker.com/Ultimaker_rev.4_assembly:_X-Y_axes
And review Step 4.
And also, if the pictures could show "Front view' "Side View" and the sort would be enormously helpful. You post a lot of pictures but no captions or highlights of what one is seeing...or should look for.
We're quitting for the night, very disappointed we couldn't get beyond this
As someone who does technical writing for years in software, try to understand my frustration
-
Well so far today we have made it thru to where we installed the axis rods (why do they called these AXES?) Upon having to rely on the wiki for instructions, the grammar needs a lot of work.
Section 1.2 and the installation of the axis rods is vague, which end do we start? When is the pulley added?
Perhaps its time for a break.

Noted! Having a friend help build is a great second set of eyes too

Very well thought out post.
I completely agree

Particle size is a big issue, coming from the medical world (I'm in information technology at a medical center so the reading material on so many health concerns is abundant!). You don't want pulmonay issues or anything else! It looks even worse for materials other than PLA...note the toxic nature of ABS and others.
So my friends, be safe!

I think dark green would be perfect for the etched robot
Well today is build day.
My R2-D2 is watching from the side...projector going...(don't mind the couch the cats have killed)
-
Great question I hope to see an answer to as well
A robot club not far from me just built their Ultimaker and thought they had the hot end on very tight...but now it has PLA oozing out too. I'm about to put mine together and wonder how "tight" is "tight" without breaking something

Those are very popular here with the remote controlled airplanes, namely the ducted-fan jets. They can turn it on and it emits red/orange light, mimicking the afterburner (re-heat in UK verbage) of a jet fighter.
I'm not sure where on the Ultimaker you could place that. However there are numerous fuse blocks/12v battery sources you could wire in.

44,99 euro = $55 US dollars...unless I seriously misread something
-
Well I started the painting...1/3 water-based latex paint, 2/3 water. Got one side done and love it. This diluted, the run lines will wipe off with ease later.
After years of working with aluminum on my R2-D2's, I forgot how fun it is to sit with a paint brush and paint wood. I re-did a few spots (namely the front face) since I wanted that to look especially nice.
No, the paint color isn't "pumpkin head", its actually called "Pumpkin Custard". At Lowes you can get a 1 pint sample for $2.49 and this is way more than I will need.
I almost went with yellow, since I really thought it would be fun to have that "tonka truck" yellow color on this. But the orange on another Ulimaker I saw in a video really impressed me.

Friend shared this with me, its a good read

Ventilation is important!

It almost sounds like someone needs to design a means/way/device to seal the filament while attached to the ultimaker
-
I don't think you mean "thicker" tape but wider...right? Since narrower tape makes for a lot more lines/strips needed to cover the plate
Can you elaborate on this?
Assembly: You are given a bag of silver grub screws. Replace the black ones in your pulleys with those.
Good timing....I'm painting the wood pieces tomorrow, assembly the next day!

I've had a fair amount of metal work/machining done overseas and DHL is always very quick.
I saw there was a reselller in the USA (http://www.makershed.com/Ultimaker_3D_Printer_p/mkum1.htm) but it said they were out once you tried to add it to your cart.
Based on the communication i was reading here on the Ultimaker site between company/technicians and customers, I was comfortable buying the latest and greatest direct from the company. I was on the pre-release list of the second extruder as well, so that I have too

Friends!
I ordered my Ultimaker kit on a Friday afternoon here in the United States (so no doubt my friends in the Netherlands were closed for the day). It arrived the following Thursday from DHL. The box looks great, so it didn't get squished, damaged or the like.
I was really impressed how well everything was packaged up, everything is well marked and labeled.
I do a lot of online purchases and it takes a long time to get things shipped from across the USA at times. For this to come from Europe to here in so short a span...I am just completely impressed.
I've been following the Ultimaker reviews, stories and news for well over a year. I am pretty excited to put this together over the Labor Day weekend...once, of course, I paint it

Now one question
I bought the second extruder option. Should I still build it into the machine (modifying the assembly some) and just not use it until I am ready to? Or simply build the kit with the single extruder?
I am debating the merits of taking the Ultimaker apart multiple times.

My kit arrived yesterday!
Wow...lot's and lot's of pieces! Very well packaged!
After work, I have to buy some latex (water based) paint, dilute and paint my wood pieces

Alright Daid, I felt like I wasn't giving my pets enough love and appreciation, so I changed my profile picture to match you
Help with the Axes setup (1.2 Step 4)

I'm having a tough time visualizing and interpeting the instructions and pictures on this step. Which rods get a pulley, how many? Which side? Which way should the blocks be facing?
Thank you!
