  1. Hi Jonny,

I'm interested in taking it further and I'm refining ideas based on what people have suggested and have been talking about. Also, the first vacuuming idea (apart from being interesting and challenging) serves as a good test case to improve the collaboration features. It involves different distinct skills and it's a bigger project than most individuals have time to do by themselves.

One of the possible solutions is the creation of 'design teams'. I'd like to allow people to add team members to a design that you initially made (could be a stub), you can give them roles (e.g. EE guru, Mechanical wizard :), coordinator, sponsor (?), etc. ). This seems like functionality that can be built reasonably fast, although I should try to get a good estimate. Being part of the team means you can 'edit at will'.

Proposing edits should also be possible, so you can make an edit that needs to be confirmed by the owner or a team-member. If the contribution is good or at least interesting, a 'drive-by contributor' can easily be invited onto the team by one of the members.

    What do you think?!

P.s. @PabloBell, @Chopmeister, @Ian and others... I've noted down your excellent suggestions as well and I'm trying to get them into the development pipeline the best I can.

  2. Hi aabr3ds,

    Welcome!

I think Sep 22 isn't the best timing, but we're going to push out a mail to all of those who have asked a question that is likely to cover your question and answer some you hadn't asked yet. Bear with us a little bit longer. We're getting lots of sales requests for the Ultimaker 2, but we will scale up support staff accordingly. While this does take some time before you'll notice this, when you get your Ultimaker 2, this will probably already have happened.

In the mean time, if you ask your question here, maybe someone can already give you an answer.

Also, this video tells you quite a bit about us and our latest releases:

  3. Hi All!

Thank you all for watching, staying up late, for caring and for supporting us in so many ways.

I'd like to know a bit more about the reliability of the extruder. The extruder on the Ultimaker 1 gave me problems every once in a while. Has this reliability been approved?

I mentioned it briefly. We actually had two competing designs for a long time and we ended up going for the current one because it was the most reliable and really easy to take apart for even a beginner. Also, it uses active cooling, so that prevents backflowing problems a little more.

Will the UM2 support the use of the Doodle3D that is being developed?

We've been testing with Doodle3D just recently and we can confirm that it works nicely with the Ultimaker. Actually we've already had the 'print' button on YouMagine working with the Doodle3D box as well, but it wasn't ready for prime-time and the things I had developed for it needed further development to become good enough for a release (e.g. security wasn't properly handled, you couldn't really delete from your queue, etc.).

PS I know you all are busy but please also look at my e-mail to info@ultimaker.com.

We well have to try to answer most e-mail after the weekend, because firstly we're demo'ing at Maker Faire and secondly, well it's weekend.

  4. Hello Nicolinux, understand that the Ultimaker Original is still a really powerful machine. The Ultimaker² is much easier to use for a non-technical person, this doesn't mean that it makes the Ultimaker Original has become irrelevant. It still beats most other 3D printers in both speed and build quality, at the same time. And we're still commited to upgrading our current customers, you're what got us here in the first place. Mind you, upgrades do take time to develop, but we will release them over time, yes: for the Ultimaker Original as well as the Ultimaker².

And given your username Nicolinux, you don't need a noob friendly user interface on your machine, even if it's pleasant, its not your first priority, I assume... (hope I'm right :) )

  5. Hi 3dcase,

Right now if the model is very big and takes longer to upload, the upload sometimes fails. I've been working on an upload method that will fix this and make uploads up to 30-40 times faster for ASCII STL files, and about 5 times faster for binary STLs. But it's not integrated into YouMagine yet... Right now you can find my temporary conversion service at: http://remesh.it/

It will not send your model to a server, it will work in your browser.

Is the file you tried to upload an ASCII STL? If so, you should convert it before uploading. These are about an order of magnitude larger in file size, which increases the likelihood of failed uploads (right now).

Also, right now, to get a preview of the STL file, it should be a lowercase extension. This will hopefully be fixed in a couple of days if all other bug fixes go as planned.

  6. That's funny because I kept typing thingieverse for the longest time. and then thingiverse...

I remember reminding Zach Smith to register thingyverse.com (now that I read it, it looks strange, but that's what I'd been typing back then). But that was before Makerbot was founded.

    Thanks, David, Erik... everyone.

The changes have already helped a lot  I spend a lot of time on here every day, so even subtle changes make a big difference  I was a bit overwhelmed yesterday, but fortunately y'all were able to articulate the issues better than 'Aaaaargh' which was all i could, unhelpfully, manage at the time...

Regarding the posting of updates from YouMagine, I do have some further ideas.

I feel like the weakest part of this forum system is the handling of multipage posts, especially when those get over 3 pages, and the page navigation buttons become a bit cumbersome. So I think it's better to avoid those where possible. I also like to try and keep the clutter in 'New Content' view to an absolute minimum. I try to make sure that I read everything that I might be able to contribute to, so I'm always aiming to have nothing unread in the New Content page.

While having a separate YouMagine forum is a help, it still doesn't go quite far enough, because this post is also in that section - so now I miss this discussion, from my 'new content' list, if I try to filter out the thread about new posts (which, yes, is low traffic at the moment, but hopefully will get busier).

So what I'd suggest, is having a separate 'forum' (as each of these topic areas seem to be called) just for the automated postings. That way I can ignore them all at once, and still get everything else  Lock it down so that no one can start new topics in it, if possible. You could even then switch to one posting per item... that would solve the multipage problem, and actually showcase stuff better (while still allowing the whole thing to be filtered out). I don't mind browsing it sometimes... i just don't want it to overwhelm the discussion/help threads.

If you really wanted to get adventurous - I wonder if it's possible to write/buy/enable a layout plugin for that forum, so you could display the posts as thumbnails? More of a Pinterest look, so that people can browse the posts visually, and then click into, and comment on, whatever is of interest to them?

That would also be a great way to display the 'What have you MADE?' section. And again, while I'm on that subject... what do folks think about locking down the now 548 post-long 'Post Your Latest Print' thread, and encouraging people to start new threads. While it was a great conversation starter... now that it's gotten so long, I don't think that having to click through multiple pages to get to something that is better browsed visually is a particularly good way to showcase what our community is doing.

If I understand you correctly, the whole way to showcase graphical things should be done differently. When I think of it, more and more do I think a small embedded html-widget that is intended to show latest new YouMagine content graphically, would be the easiest. Modifying the forum is probably quite difficult, but writing the widget and figuring out how to show it somewhere would be easier. Or perhaps we should post design updates into a gallery (but it would remove the option to include links and easily show the name of the designer and other details).

Just know that the volume of new designs will probably not outpace the individual frequency of replies. And they will not require an answer, only some feedback if you feel like giving feedback...

  7. @mastory: to the contrary: your comments are constructive and very helpful. If you don't say a thing and we keep an inferior/annoying situation, the whole experience only becomes less pleasant. And I want to maximize how pleasant and capable this platform (including but not limited to printer, forum and YouMagine) is for this awesome community.

I appreciate this community so much because it's become so much more than I could have wished for! People are making friends, being taught, becoming teachers and experts and world-changers all at the same time!

That's why I want to expand from just 'vanilla' open discussion forums into creating, sharing ideas and design. Imagine what we will be making...

  8. (sorry for replying in English here, It's probably easier to understand than when I would write it in german).

It would be interesting to make support mostly out of PLA and only make the interface out of PVA. Also, if PVA needs to support things inside cavities, those should probably be supported by PVA only. Detecting this by algorithm would be hard, but perhaps we can create a 'masking' system where you'd determine these things. It would be complicated to develop such a feature, but it would be great if we could make those prints affordably.

  9. Right, so the checklist is ( summarizing @owen and @ 12much):

    1. [*]Make sure you've approved the validation request by mail (confirmed it with the received link)

    [*]

On the top right next to your user name click on the arrow and then click on 'My Settings'

    [*]

On the left blue column half way down click on 'Signature'

    [*]

Enter your signature and Click on 'Save Changes'

Tips for adding a 'my YouMagine designs' bar in your signature (see my signature for how it looks):

    [YouMagineUser=your-lowercase-youmagine-name]

  10. That would make sense... I'm not sure if it's possible to change the order, though. I had a quick look, but it seems that if it's possible, it would be a global setting for the entire forum. That's a bit too much. Maybe we need to make a little widget that shows the latest designs which you can click away once you've seen it.

  11. And I was so proud of the nice combo David and I did on the signature image. :???: </emotional sabotage mode>

I agree that especially my own signature becomes really long and cluttered, because I'm also trying to explain how to get such a signature. Updates to YouMagine aren't occuring that often as you've seen today, but the script needed to catch up and list the most recent things. I agree that a separate area would work.

We can look at the signature, it's quite colory... that's also the whole idea behind YouMagine, it should be stimulating and inspire you to be creative. But you're right that conversations on the forums and Google Group are colory and lively enough ;)

The signature image script is free for anyone to adjust and propose a better version. I'll put it in a repository on GitHub.

@Ian: I think we should definitely support IE10. It's no fun, but we don't want to shut out people that care to visit our website. And especially we don't want to shut out the Ians of this world :)

  12. Hi Ian,

Since it's not clear what we're doing differently and why it doesn't work for me, I've uploaded a video on YouTube that shows exactly what I'm doing. I'm uploading as follows:

    I'm using a macbook with Chorme 28.0.1500.95

I've seen at least David use Windows with chrome on a regular basis, and probably other browsers were also used.

Can you tell me a bit more specific what you're doing when it fails to upload? Do you get to see the green bars?

  13. Hi Erik,

It seems like everybody (every signature-link) is being directed to your account..

That is not necessary.. you are in the picture enough already ;)

Yep. I agree. So I fixed that and I'll hide under a rock for now.

Technical explanation: It kept using the ImageMap that was defined the first, and since my image showed up in the HTML first, the others had the same links. Now the image maps are individual.

  14. That did it, thanks!

Man, now I have to get to work with my designs :)

/edit: If I click on the YM logo in my sig, it opens YM in the same window. Can this be changed to open a new window (html code should allow that definition)? I'd prefer it that way so you don't lose the UM forum when browsing...

@ designs: yup, an empty bar is... well... empty. More fun to have cool stuff in there. I mostly uploaded stuff I already had made before. But I should do some new projects again.

Good idea on the link opening in a new tab... I've changed that right away. Most bbcode will be cached, so the following is to do a proper check:

    [ymuser=daid]

That's daid's sig. Daid made the image generator, so props to him :)
