Best free image converter

i have seen the mattercontrol image converter and would love to be able to buy it, but i dont have the money. what are alternative image converter softwares that are free but on par with matter control to make easy stl's.

You can load images straight into cura if all you want is a "height map" so to speak.

i tried this out, and its capabilities are garbage compared to the mattercontrol one. lines and extrusions are drawn from nowhere; and the height map i cant see ever being useful for any functional print. know of anything else?

I accomplish this with several different free tool paths depending on what I need the final result to be.

can someone help me find a better 3d converter compatible with MatterControl. MatterControl just refuses to convert my images at all and no one can seem to help me. It was working fine when I first downloaded the app, the within the first 3minutes of using, it completely stopped. I have a Mac, someone please help me or point me to the right direction for a better and more effective one
