scraping during a travel move

Posted · scraping during a travel move

I had a simple print and I noticed afterwards that there was a slight "gouge" or scrape at the top. I looked over the print in Simplify3D, and the line corresponded to a "travel move". I assume the travel move is a movement with no filament flowing? Why is it happening, and how do I stop it from happening?

It's also called combing line if it is a travel move without retraction (you will find a number of posts with that topic here).

There are two possibilities to avoid it: combing along walls and/or z-hop.

Are you slicing with S3D or with Cura?

OK, @Neotko is the true S3D champion here but I'll try to give you a starting point.

In the process settings go to tab 'Advanced' and tick 'Avoid crossing outline for travel movements'. Then check the result. Sometimes it's still crossing the surface. Then you have to play around with the 'Maximum allowed detour factor' just below on the 'Advanced' tab. For some prints I had to put this factor to 50 to make sure it really takes 'the way around the lake'.

That a great solution. What I do it's to activate wipe and then on advanced retract while wiping, that will increase the number of retractions by a ton but also it will allow the head to carry less material when moving from a to b. Or just Turn off (in advanced) 'Only retract while crossin an open space' this will force to retract material always before moving internally inside an object, but indeed, to avoid 100% scratch just use @dim3nsionner advice.

    Lol 'champion' XD thanks men

Note: My suggestions will increase the retraction by the thousands, not all feeder can handle it without grinding filament.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
