Posted · UM2+ reboots very early in print, how to debug?

I have an UM2 that I upgraded to an UM2+. I have been printing for the past couple of months fixing various issues along the way, but this one has me stumped.

Problem: The Ultimaker 2+ will reboot (the screen flashes the ultimaker logo) very early in the print, usually before the 10th layer, and sometimes as early as printing the brim. This started happening around when the latest Cura version was released, but I don't know if that is actually the issue (I see this happen when printing files that were sliced on older versions of Cura)

As I am completely unsure on what causes this, I'll post my process of printing.

  1. Slice the model in Cura (usually get the model from thingiverse)
  2. Export to an SD card and plug into a running UM2+. Wait for a few seconds for UM2+ to read it.
  3. Start the print
  4. While the heated bed is preparing, I have noticed that the nozzle doesn't heat up to the temperature 220 C. So I usually TUNE->Heat nozzle-> 220 C
  5. The print starts and I am watching it to make sure that it extrudes. It seems to extrude a bit, but most times I have to apply some pressure on the filament going up into the feeder to get the teeth to find purchase. I think this may be due to the previous print failing and grinding.
  6. Usually within the first couple of layers I'll see the entire machine shutdown and reboot. It shows the first screen that you see when you boot up normally. The print head is still on the print and the bed is raised.

This is the 2nd time that this has started happening. I fixed it last time (for a couple of prints) by factory defaulting the box, cleaning the glass plate, and setting it up again. I set it up by adding a custom filament type on the box to set the temperatures to 220 for all nozzle sizes and change the diameter to 1.75mm (is this bad? does Cura specify those settings in the gcode?). I plan on pulling out the printer and checking the temperature sensor wires next, but other than just re-plugging them, I'm kind of lost.

My main question is this: Is there a good way to get the logs of the system to see what happened to cause it to shut off? I'd love to see "HEAT ERROR" or "FEEDER ERROR" or really anything to point me in the right direction.

Other questions include: Is there a way to check the firmware of the UM2+? I have no idea where to check it at.

Sorry for the story, Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I'll try to catch a video of it happening, but it happens fast.

Power supply brick on it's last legs and getting ready to fail?  Just a thought.  Before I purchased my UM3 I had a UM2.  Not a 2+, had to replace the brick at one month old under warranty.  Acted similarly.

Like I said, just a thought

My gut feelings says that if a power issue causes the reboot there probably is no log...

About the firmware, I'm running tinkerware, but on mine you find the version in ADVANCED/PREFERENCES/VERSION, may be a bit different in the original firmware, not sure.

Can you borrow an UM2 power brick from someone to rule out it's the cause? (where are you located?)

The first thing I would do is check all connections on the main board, are all connectors ok, are the screws (depending on how old the machine is) for the bed heater tight?

And unrelated, but why do you set filament to 1.75, is the machine converted to 1.75 ?

Thanks for the advice, I was kind of afraid it might be a power supply issue. I still have the original power supply that came with the UM2. Should I try to get the same one, or is there a better alternative?

Most of my filament is 1.75mm PLA, Normally I can run it just fine, but I guess it just clogs a bit more. Setting it to 1.75 in the printer's settings seems to just make it push the plastic faster to compensate for the lower thickness. Are there other steps required to fully change it to 1.75?

And yes I would just get an original meanwell power supply..

Thanks for the link for the conversion! Hopefully that will fix a lot of my headaches..

I went ahead and ordered a new power supply, so hopefully that will fix those issues as well.

I’m my personal experience the bootup of um2 boards usually are due a bad heater. It’s easy to debug, heat bed for X minutes (same as the time needed to reboot while printing). Then turn off. Then heat hotend for the same time (or more ofc). Then finally if doesn’t fail heat both hotend and bed for X minutes, if only then fails it might be the psu, otherwise is a heater block

I think I tried those steps before, and it lasted for 30 minutes or so before I got bored and tried to print something. Just to have it fail a few layers in. Maybe it was a combination of factors including me trying to print 1.75 without mods. I went ahead and ordered the PSU and it should be arriving either today or tomorrow, so I guess we'll see.

I wanted to update on this. I ordered the extra power supply, but it's just stayed in the box for now as I haven't seen a repeat of the problem. I swapped over to the 2.85mm filament that I have from when I bought the printer, and I've printed three or four 3 hour prints.

Now I'm looking into convincing my SO to allow me to tinker in the Mark2 upgrade 🙂
