Posted · Can not load a 3mf file as a project

I am trying to load a 3mf file into Cura 5.0 as a project so I can extract the profile from it. When I load the file it just loads the print that is in the file but I never get the "Load As Profile" dialog box. I know the profile is in the file as others have used it and I even unzipped it and I can see all of the content. Running Cura 5.0 on Win10. Thanks!

On the "General" page of the Cura preferences, scroll down to "Opening and saving files" and check that the "Default behavior when opening a project file" is not set to "Always import models".

No Op, but I am having the same issue.  I can confirm that the "Opening and saving files" and check that the "Default behavior when opening a project file" is not set to "Always import models", but set to "Always ask me this", but I also tried "Always open as a project" and it still does not import or ask to import settings.  I USE TO HAVE the setting at "Always import models", but changed it and restarted cura.

    Cura 5.0.0 ( and also Cura 5.1.0 Beta + 304 )

I will also attach it here.

    stderr.log file attached.

EDIT: Help on FB suggested it may be the Start-up Optimizer causing issues, and when I disabled it,  I was able to import the 3mf as a project.

So, is this a Start-up Optimizer issue, Cura importer issue, or user error?

I have been wrestling with this since Cura 5 came out and I tried Cura 5.1.1 today with the same issue.

However today I tried something new. I changed my dual monitor setup to a single monitor setup and it opened the 3mf project!

Btw I'm also Running Windows 11.

I can't seem to see if anyone has found the way to fix this. I am getting that the 3mf files are not supported. I don't have multiple monitors just one laptop. I made the changed in General and not change.

I load numerous project files in several different versions of Cura every week.  I haven't had a problem.

This thread is 2 years old and there hasn't been much response.  Can you load STL files?  What operating system?

Just mentioning that "it's broke" doesn't help a lot.

@GregValiant I never said "It's broke". I said was asking since this is an old thread, and the only one I saw with this topic was I was having this issue and I made the one suggested change.

I've attached a screenshot of what it's telling me. The file came from MakerWorld and has had great success for others. I'm on a Lenovo with Windows 11.

This is my first post/question here so I didn't realize I shouldn't post the question here. Point me in the direction I should post questions correctly.

@NifflerB90 if you could post the 3mf file or a link to where it can be downloaded that would help up investigate this problem.

As a general rule, just don't revive threads over a few months old (unless you created it). Start a new one. In situations like this with old threads it's possible you and the OP have different problems (or different causes for the same problem) and things can get muddied up.

Revisiting this since I noticed I could not open a 3MF file from Makerworld.

I selected Download 3MF and on the Bambu Lab studio, this would open and show the build plates for each part grouping.

I'm not savvy on what the "3MF" format is supposed to do across each slicer.  But Cura won't open it.

File I was working with is at this link , I selected "Download 3MF from the green button"

I did open and print these on the Bambu Labs A1 machines I have but I had wanted to print the smaller parts in ABS on my Ultimaker 2+.  I was able to do so using the "Download STL/CAD files" option.

    Thanks!

It's a project archive but not a Cura archive.  There are multiple build plates in that 3mf file.  I don't really understand that as the settings are the same for all of them.  My older version of Bambu Studio wouldn't open it and neither would MS 3D Builder.

PrusaSlicer did open it but with a single build plate and models all over the place.  Orca also opened it as those three are step-brothers.

Prusa didn't like the 10 build plates but all 25 models came in.

This is in Bambu and Orca is essentially the same.

    Hi @GregValiant

Yes, it seems to be an interesting format for sure.

It was definitely created in Bambu Studio and if I'm reading the metadata right it needs to be opened in Bambu (or something which supports Bambu extensions to the 3mf format, which Orca will because it's based on Bambu) to work correctly.

...I'd skip the hassle and just download the STLs (also in the green dropdown menu).
