I would download Printrun and use that, both for controlling the printer and for actual printing: http://koti.kapsi.fi/~kliment/printrun/
daid is doing a re-design of the whole interface of cura. Unfortunately he removed some functionality before adding it back in which is why the print interface in cura is a bit sparse at the moment. The new printing interface is editable by anyone and I think there might be one or two people working on improving it, but it might take time. For example here's owen's mod:

If you have a Ulticontroller (otherwise... get one, you won't regret it) you can use the "preheat PLA" option
Sergei, if i need the nozzle heated i use either the bed levelling wizard or the dual extrusion calibration. Both heat up the nozzle(s).
You could also start a print, and click "pause" before it starts actually printing anything, yet it will heat the nozzle.

if you have an ultimaker2.. on the little screen. click maintinance. then advanced.. then there is an option to heat up the nozzle.. then just set the temp and the nozzle will rise to that temp.
Ian :-)
